economic news of india - world economic news - economics news for students - indian economy news Posted: 01 May 2020 08:33 PM PDT For India's businesses, partial lifting barely moves the needle Posted: Mumbai | New Delhi: The business community reacted cautiously with many pointing out that the partial relaxation of the lockdown won't be enough to repair the fractured supply chain. Industry leaders, however, said they understood the government's predicament."49 days of lockdown makes statistical sense. Complete opening before that duration could have been risky. This is just four days beyond 49 days. It is, in fact, a calibrated preamble or pre-opening strategy. So, this is better than I had hoped," Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra said."But it won't solve the supply chain problem in this pre-opening phase. Hence, I can only hope that the exit post-May 17 will indeed be pan-India and comprehensive," he said."Post May 17, red zones and containment zones should be by exception only and full interstate movement of people and workers should be opened up. That will 'join the dots' of the supply chain network. If sequential opening of different parts of the country continues then, as I have said earlier, industrial recovery will be painfully slow. In manufacturing, if even one feeder factory is still locked down, then the final product assembly will be stalled," Mahindra told ET.Maruti Suzuki's chairman RC Bhargava, empathising with the challenges before the government, said: "The reason why the disease is spreading is that people are not following government regulations. If the lockdown was not extended, even districts which are now orange and green may turn into red zones. Would you want that to happen?"Bhargava said the government has specified activities which can happen in certain zones and the company has to evaluate the new measures which have been announced. Others were not so hopeful. "There's no point. They're unable to accept their mistake. Instead, they claim victory and opt for partially opening when cases are higher than ever before," an industrialist who did not want to be named said. Many fear that sequential opening of different parts of the country will not enable industrial activity to resume smoothly. But IT hardware companies say they had been requesting the government for such a move. "It is a good move," said the India CEO of an MNC IT hardware firm without wanting to be named. He would not comment whether the firm would resume production saying he had not gone through the notification.Industry lobby groups have also been asking the government for a strong stimulus. "With restricted economic activities, the imperative for a quick and forceful economic support package for the industry is even more compelling now. CII has suggested instituting a government spending package equivalent to 3% of GDP which would add Rs 6 lakh crore to the available firepower. Enhanced debt to GDP ratio can be a way out for adding fiscal space at a time when the debt to GDP ratio is modest in India," said Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII. Mobile phone sellers are set to reopen stores as the government eases restrictions."All standalone (single) shops, neighbourhood (colony) shops and shops in residential complexes are permitted to remain open in urban areas, without any distinction of essential and non-essential," the ministry of home affairs said on Friday. | Lockdown takes wind out of Amazon's sales Posted: Bengaluru: Amazon cited restrictions on ecommerce deliveries imposed by India in the ongoing lockdown to stem the spread of Covid-19, as the reason for its business in the world's fifth largest economy being the most impacted by the pandemic, even as the American giant recorded a sharp spike in its overall revenue for the first quarter of 2020.The Indian government's mandate that ecommerce companies only fulfil orders of essential goods such as groceries during the past five weeks has led to Amazon cutting back on a lot of its offerings in the country, company executives told analysts on Thursday."We're in a bit of a holding pattern except for grocery in India," said Brian Olsavsky, chief financial officer at Amazon, in a call with analysts after the company's announcement of its earnings in the first quarter of 2020. "We're now only fulfilling (orders) for essential goods...so that's a cutback on a lot of our offering." 75499707Pantry Services ExpandedMeanwhile, on Friday, ministry of home affairs revised its guidelines and said ecommerce firms would be allowed to resume full operations in parts of the country designated as green (virus-free) and orange ( with low levels of infection) zones starting from May 4. However, deliveries will continue to be limited only to essential items in red zones with high levels of infection, including the top metros — Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. After getting off to a rocky start in delivering food and groceries in India — in large parts due to labour shortages and supply issues — Amazon has now expanded its Pantry service to 128 cities delivering pulses, packaged food and cleaning products. Normal deliveries of other essential items are up and running in 68 cities, the company said on its website.Despite the surge in volume and value of grocery deliveries over the past month, analysts and industry executives estimate that Amazon's India business is operating at less than 10% of its gross merchandise value prior to the lockdown, which began on March 25.The Seattle-based company's international sales, which accounts for all its businesses outside the US including India, posted an 18% growth to $19.1 billion in the first quarter, while losses more than quadrupled to $398 million compared to the year earlier period.Company executives said Amazon has grown its overall sales amid the pandemic, with revenues rising 26% to $75.5 billion. However, profits fell to $2.5 billion, down from $3.6 billion in the same quarter last year due to increased spending on its Covid-19 response. Meanwhile, experts are of the view that as India's curbs on full-fledged ecommerce began only at the very end of the first quarter, the total impact is yet unknown. | Red, orange and green put India in grey area Posted: The government is making a hash of loosening restrictions while extending the lockdown. Its guidelines are a bureaucrat's delight and an administrator's nightmare. Enforcing the complex guidelines will create the difficulties the guidelines seek to remove, by seeking to resume work in quite a few sectors and geographies. The guidelines bring in a new category, the containment zone: a locality that poses a threat of spreading Covid-19 and amenable to containment, a single building or a cluster of homes, as the case may be. This is most sensible. The logical corollary would be to divide the country into containment zones and non-containment zones, and allow economic activity to resume in the non-containment zones. Instead, the government has introduced additional shades to Red and Orange, while categorising zones in terms of Covid-19 risk, and allowing differentiated kinds of activity in each shade. This is bureaucratic self-indulgence, not policy that helps either public health or the economy. | Cooking oil demand from big buyers to fall 30-35% Posted: NEW DELHI: Retail cooking oil sales have started increasing but demand from big buyers such as hotels, bakeries and caterers remains weak, said industry executives.Demand from big buyers is likely to fall 30-35% this year, said Sudhakar Desai, president of the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA), an apex organisation of vegetable oil producers in the country.Sale to households is likely to rise, though, said Desai. "With restaurant and hotels closed, consumers are cooking at home and procuring more oil," he said.Household consumption in the past month, when the country was under a lockdown triggered by Covid-19, increased 10-15%, according to Angshu Mallick, deputy chief executive officer at Adani Wilmar."The situation is slowly improving and once the green and orange zones are opened, then we can expect, by May 15, distribution and sales to further pick up," said Mallick. In the past month, sale of packed oil in the country was 1.2 million tonnes, out of which 60% was sold to households and the rest to big buyers. Sales to big buyers halved during this period, said Mallick. The bakery sector has resumed 40% of its orders while institutional sales may start once factories and companies open, said Mallick. | ICRA upgrades drug companies as China reopens Posted: Mumbai: As China restarts manufacturing activity, including for pharmaceutical raw material, rating agency Icra has revised its outlook for the Indian pharma sector to 'stable' from 'negative' earlier. When Icra revised the rating earlier this year, the fear was that a shutdown in China prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic would block key active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from coming into the country. APIs are the basic ingredients for drugs.Five months since that revision however, Indian drug companies have managed their supply chain. The bottleneck that hit production though came from the countrywide lockdown which also hit air travel and movement of cargo. In a report, Icra said manufacturing activity has gradually started in China with shipments and air cargo arriving for APIs, intermediates and key starting materials. This has helped producers, although capacity utilisation across plants has yet to reach levels seen before the lockdown due to restrictions on movement of people and availability of non-critical raw material like packaging. Most companies said earlier they held inventory for 2-4 months, both at the manufacturing as well as at the distributor level, sufficient till the end of the lockdown.Raw material prices had however increased and there could be a slight "moderation" in profits of pharma companies due to higher costs. On the exports front, Indian companies remain stable for now, Icra said, due to the inelastic nature of prescription drugs for chronic therapies. It is possible that companies might also gain because of the rupee's depreciation against the dollar, it said in the report.Drug companies told ET that getting staff back to work was proving difficult. Companies are promising high daily wages and a "sanitised" work environment to employees, and those who could not work during the lockdown period are also being paid salaries.Last month, ET reported that medicine sales across the country had dipped, as lockdown measures kept other infectious diseases at bay and as early panic buying left pharmacies with large stocks. | Nil: Local sales shown by auto companies in April Posted: New Delhi: Indian automakers reported zero sales in the local market in April with factories and dealerships shut in compliance with government orders to check the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki (MSIL) did not sell a single unit in the domestic market, including sales to OEM (original equipment manufacturers), in April 2020. "This was because in compliance with the government orders all production facilities were closed," the company said in a filing to the BSE. Maruti Suzuki had sold 1,31,385 passenger vehicles in the domestic market in April 2019."Domestic sales stood at nil amid nationwide lockdown due to pandemic Covid-19," said Hyundai Motor India. The company had sold 42,005 units in April 2019. Automakers in the country report wholesale dispatches from factories and not retail sales made to customers.Maruti Suzuki did receive permission from the Gurugram administration to restart production at its facility in Manesar on a single-shift basis late last month, but chairman RC Bhargava said operations will resume only when it can be done in a sustainable manner.Veejay Nakra, chief executive officer, automotive division, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) said, "At Mahindra, we are working hand-in-hand with all stakeholders, especially our dealer and supplier partners, to get our ecosystem started, once the lockdown is lifted." Mahindra is hopeful that the company's dealerships will open soon and has stocks to cover the first few weeks of sale. Mahindra sold zero units last month compared to sales of 19,966 units registered in the year-ago period. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), too, posted zero sales last month as against 10,112 units sold last April. "Restart of the entire value chain cycle and its restoration will be gradual as the industry is faced with the challenges of low consumer sentiments and rebuilding of disrupted supply chains," said Naveen Soni, senior vice-president (sales & services) at TKM. MG Motor India, which reports only retail sales figures, also recorded zero sales .Meanwhile, following the resumption of port operations, Maruti Suzuki said the first export shipment of 632 vehicles was undertaken from the Mundra port. Hyundai exported 1,341 vehicles and Mahindra 733 in April. | How Goldman Sachs manager is preparing for post-Covid world Posted: By Vildana HajricChaos has ruled markets for months. With a pandemic pummeling the economy, and everyone from central banks to mom and pop investors trying to push asset prices back up, it's a setting guaranteed to strain the insights of fund managers.Consider a quantity called dispersion, or how varied individual stock returns are. Bashed around in earnings season, differences between winners and losers in the S&P 500 are right now almost twice the average of the last decade. That creates openings for active managers who can hunt beyond indexes for companies positioned to bounce, according to Katie Koch, co-head of fundamental equity at Goldman Sachs Asset Management. Funds advised by Koch, whose firm has about $1.8 trillion under supervision, are beating their benchmarks at an 80% rate in 2020."You want to take advantage of this dispersion and possibly find these names that haven't been as resilient as the rest of the market, therefore providing higher upside," she said by phone this week. "You need to look beyond the mega-cap, very resilient tech names to find those recovery opportunities."That big gaps would open in valuations is one thing people got right when trying to forecast the current earnings season, which has come without the aid of reliable estimates. Indeed, many professional traders were excited by the prospect of a market thrown into chaos by the pandemic's economic consequences, believing it would be an opportunity to exploit their real-time edge.75492109Equity markets have shown tremendous resilience in the face of tough economic data thanks, in part, to intervention by the Federal Reserve. The central bank's balance sheet has ballooned in recent weeks, passing $6 trillion, with some economists projecting it could top 50% of U.S. GDP by the end of the year. Thus, one time-honored rule rings loudest at Goldman."Don't fight the Fed," Koch said by phone this week. "The sheer volume of monetary support and also what they're buying has really removed a lot of the left-tail risk for equity markets and that's being reflected in the current relatively resilient levels of the S&P 500."Her recommendation to clients? Stay invested but be aggressively active in the pursuit of "abundant" opportunities that exist at the company level.Companies should, most importantly, have balance sheet strength to manage through a protracted shutdown. From a valuation perspective, Koch looks for firms that have been heavily discounted relative to their value. Lastly, she looks for businesses that might be attached to secular growth opportunities her team believes will eventually recover.75492119Here are some of the areas Koch and her team are exploring:Back To WorkWhile greater work-from-home adoption might become a post-crisis legacy, large swaths of employees will likely be returning to the office. That should benefit areas such as childcare, catering, industrial cleaning and small-business solutions, including companies that provide payment solutions for smaller businesses.Koch also says a number of company executives she's been in touch with have voiced a desire to localize some of the most vulnerable parts of their supply chains. Should that happen, advanced manufacturing companies and 3-D printing firms might be well positioned to reap the benefits because they can help control for labor costs, she said.Having Fun, AgainOne of the most visible and alarming emblems of the current crisis has been the escalation in jobless claims and the accompanying plunge in consumer confidence. Fears the consumer might be slow to bounce back are everywhere, with Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, saying this week that the downturn's depth and duration remain extremely uncertain, with the burden falling most heavily on those least able to carry them.Koch and her team expect a gradual recovery but find comfort in historical precedent. Crises, including the current one, tend to make people eventually want to go out and live life to the fullest. "We do expect a gradual resurgence of the millennial consumer preference for experience over things," she said.Highly select travel names and second-derivative plays in the travel space -- such as tech companies that enable travel planning as well as restaurants -- could be beneficiaries.Data DominationAs businesses shuttered in March, millions migrated to working from home -- and many may continue to do so even once the coronavirus outbreak has been conquered. One of the legacies of this crisis is going to be demand for getting data and getting it faster, said Koch. A greater number of people might live their lives online than they did before the outbreak -- and it's a trend that could resonate across multiple generations. This may expedite 5G capex spend in the U.S. and potentially around the world. While many data-related names have been resilient, there is a dislocation between price and value in select semiconductor companies that are focused on 5G solutions, she said. | Global exposure must to create robust alpha: Shankar Sharma Posted: It is about time Indian investors found a way to add a pinch of overseas flavour to their portfolios to be able to generate robust alpha."The Indian equity market hardly delivered any return to investors in dollar terms over the past 10 years," says Shankar Sharma, a Dalal Street veteran of nearly four decades."Every Indian investor has become poorer in dollar terms over this period," he says.Sharma, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director at Mumbai-based First Global, said the growth rate of the Indian economy has been trending downwards over the past few years. "This is also visible in the subdued performance of the equity market," he said.Sharma is bang on with his numbers. The BSE Dollex 30, which is dollar-denominated Sensex, gained just 15 per cent in last 10 years, and is down 1 per cent for last five years."India delivered good returns going up to 2009-10, and after that, our market has not given any return to investors in dollar terms," Sharma told the ETMarkets Investor Conference on Friday."In contrast, investors who allocated even a moderate amount of money to global markets made good money," he said.Sharma said simply buying overseas ETF does not mean global diversification.Watch Shankar Sharma's full speech at ETMarkets Investor Conference 75488468"Diversification does not mean just buying global ETF. That's the stupid thing to do. Leadership changes every year across the world," he said.Sharma advised investors to not limit themselves to equity alone while going into global investing. There are many interesting asset classes, including fixed income securities."Indians need to start thinking of diversifying their wealth outside of Indian equities. You need to get out of the mindset that everything has to be only in India. Our diversification strategy worked for us. We have received up to 150 times returns from Amazon and Apple. There is huge money to be made globally and in India. But in dollar terms, it is very hard to beat the dollar depreciation," Sharma said. The market veteran said investors should not have more than 20-25 positions, and each holding should not hold more than 5 per cent of weightage in the overall portfolio. "Do keep some allocation towards global investing," he said.Sharma said tight risk management is very important. In March alone, investors lost much of the gains they made over the years. BSE benchmark Sensex lost more than 23 per cent in one month. He called the leverage space, such as NBFCs, the most dangerous spot in the India market currently, and advised investors to stay away from it."It is pretty clear that there is large-scale damage happening to businesses. Thousands of businesses will probably never be able to come back. People will not be able to pay their EMIs soon and this is going to hit NBFC balance sheets," Sharma said.Despite the solid rally being seen in Indian stocks through much of April, Sharma advised investors to maintain a cautious approach. "It happened after the vertical fall of March. This was expected," he said. The broad-based rally in April lifted benchmark Sensex over 14 per cent in April, while BSE Midcap index climbed 14 per cent and BSE Smallcap index 15 per cent.Sharma said India has huge potential in terms of land and labour to grab the opportunity being created by global supply chain's move to shift out of China to other countries."If I were the leader of India, I would go on a roadshow in major economies around the world, including the US, Europe, Germany and Japan, from where companies outsource production to China. I will flood every newspaper and TV networks across the world with invites to set up businesses in India," he said.Sharing his thoughts on the government's response in terms of fiscal stimulus, Sharma said the government is starved of cash. "I don't think much is coming. There will be something, but I don't think it will be substantial. Revenue has taken a massive hit due to the ongoing crisis," he said.He said the richer countries to recover from Covid crisis very quickly. "India too will recover, but at a more gradual pace." | Indians bet on online gaming to kill boredom Posted: Mumbai | Kolkata: Online games involving exchange of money have caught on with Indians stuck at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Gaming firms have noted a sharp increase in customers looking to ward off boredom by indulging in games such as poker, rummy and bingo, and are placing bets even on simple games like ludo and Candy Crush."More people are playing rummy during the lockdown," said Prithvi Singh, founder of GamesKraft, which debuted with an Indian rummy cash game in 2017.He estimates a 10-15% increase in the number of registered users on his gaming platform since the lockdown started, up from about 2.5 million users in early March.75499614And what are the stakes? "The platform entry fee starts from Rs 25 and then ranges higher, depending on the stakes put in," Singh said.Online gaming nights are one way of socialising and competition with money makes it more exciting, said an expert. If played via gaming platforms, money transfers can happen using e-wallets and tokens, which can be later encashed. But among family and friends, a few rounds of bingo or housie, played over video calls, are seeing online monetary transactions as well.Last weekend, for example, a group of friends based in Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, London and elsewhere decided to make their weekly video calls more interesting by calling it a Bingo Night, one of the participants told ET. They charged Rs 100 per ticket and the pool was split into wins like Jaldi Five, Four Corners, Breakfast, Sandwich, Top Lines and two Full Houses."That one hour was the best hour of the week," said the person, who works at a research analyst firm and is currently staying in a flat with her family in Mumbai. "The money factor adds to the excitement. It is like entering a casino where you may not win, but carrying the chips is the fun part," she said, adding she also won a Full House. There are websites and apps that allow users to play online games. They charge a fee per game and the stakes increase as it progresses. However, casual betting has also increased among family and friends where money is transferred directly to the winner or the moderator, who distributes it as per the rules of the game.Gaming companies Adda52 and Octro did not respond to ET's queries.Experts in human behaviour said online gambling helps divert the mind."There is a whole lot of uncertainty right now. In such circumstances, this serves as a distraction," Pune-based psychiatrist Dayal Mirchandani told ET. "Compared to playing chess, scrabble, etc., when you're gambling and it's fast-paced, the mind wanders less."However, people can get easily hooked."Players who are betting money initially for innocent fun can get addicted to making quick cash. That is a bit dangerous," said Alok Kejriwal, cofounder and CEO of Games2win, a publisher of mobile games. "There are cases where a new player in poker may want to buy the virtual chips from another person using real money instead of grinding to earn it himself."Games2win, which has 30 million users, has only casual mobile games on its platform.Gambling on online platforms can land people in legal trouble. "In India, gambling or betting is not allowed, except for certain exceptions in a few states, and a game which depends purely on luck is considered gambling but a game that involves substantial skills of the player is not considered gambling," said Sumit Mangal, partner, L&L Partners-Law Offices. | |

In the video, Digital Foundry discusses exactly what Variable Rate Shading is and what it means for next-gen games and consoles such as Xbox Series X. So, what is Variable Rate Shading? Basically it affects how much effort the GPU expends when rendering or shading certain areas of a frame. Basically, it increases rendering performance and quality. Visually, the shading rate can be reduced “with little or no reduction in perceptible output quality,” leading to “free” performance. In the past, each pixel generated by the GPU meant that one shading indication occurred by pixel. This meant each pixel was shaded individually as long as the game isn’t being upscaled to an output resolution. While this works, it doesn’t scale well to ultra-high resolution screens. With TVs making a huge jump from 1080p to 4k, this means users expect their consoles and GPUs to keep up. Because that isn’t “realistic,” instead of making GPUs bigger and denser, VRS looks to “smartly utilize GPU sources” to make higher resolution density more viable. With Variable Rate Shading, developers no longer have to shade every pixel individually. With the tech, these pixels are shaded more coarsely, so instead of every 4k pixel being shaded in a sky, for example, every 2×2 or 4×4 block will be shaded more coarsely. This also affects performance when rendering games, as you can see in the video when VRS is turned off or on in Gears Tactics and Wolfenstein: Youngblood. VRS can help speed up game engines beyond just using it for pixel shading. Theoretically, it can also sparsely render the lighting of a game for game engines that use deferred lighting, according to Digital Foundry. Of course, there is much more to Variable Rate Shading that what we’ve popped in here, so you will want to watch the video to find out more about it. It’s a rather techy video but explains VRS rather well for those of us who aren’t techy in the slightest. Xbox Series X is out this holiday. Here’s everything else we know about the next-gen console so far. You don’t have to rely on the fluctuations on your own island though. There are plenty of communities you can visit in search of the best turnip prices!
While we do detail the Turnip Market in our guide on how to make lots of money fast in Animal Crossing New Horizons, it’s such a major part of the game that it’s well worth going into detail on here on a separate page. Playing the stalk market – which of course is Animal Crossing’s playful take on the stock market – is by far and away the fastest way to make lots and lots of bells – but it also involves a great deal of risk. On this page, we’ll detail how to buy and sell Turnips, how the whole system works, and what sort of profit you can expect. Let’s get to it… Turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons ExplainedAs we mentioned above, Turnips power the Animal Crossing version of the stock market, the stalk market (Turnips, stalks… turning up a profit – get it?). Like the stock market, the price of turnips fluctuates greatly day-to-day – one day they might be up, one day they might be down massively. In Animal Crossing New Horizons, Daisy Mae will eventually visit your island once a week, every Sunday. She’ll give you the opportunity to buy Turnips, but with a caveat – Turnips spoil in seven days, so you’ll have to sell them and make your profit before the following Sunday. The following Saturday at 10pm is your last chance to sell them. If you miss the window, the Turnips spoil, and are worthless. Within this is the game you then have to play: you’ll want to check with Timmy and Tommy every day to check the price of Turnips. Turnip prices generally range from anywhere as low as 50 Bells per Turnip to as high as 200 Bells per Turnip, but in previous Animal Crossing games huge spikes have seen them even get close to 1000 Bells each. If you have a small spike on Monday where you could turn a profit, do you sell your Turnips right away, or hold on to hope the price spikes even higher still? Turnips can’t be sold on a Sunday, only purchased from Daisy Mae. She also only starts showing up on your island once you’ve built some infrastructure and the Nook’s Cranny shop building. You aren’t guaranteed to make a profit with Turnips. Just like the stock market, there is an element of this that is entirely out of your control. Both the price you can sell for and the price you can buy for from Daisy Mae vary – so you have to decide how much you want to risk. Remember, too, that you can’t store Turnips in your house ‘storage’ – though you can drop them on the floor inside. Dedicated stalk market traders will probably want to dedicate a whole room to Turnip storage. How to buy and when to sell Turnips in Animal Crossing: New HorizonsWhile there is no hard or fast rule for Turnips in Animal Crossing New Horizons, we’d say any time you can buy them for under 100 Bells each is a solid investment. There are no guarantees if you’re extremely unlucky, but Turnip prices usually hit at least 100 Bells at some point in the week, meaning if you get Turnips for less than that a profit is likely so long as you pay attention and check the price regularly. Check the price of Turnips with Timmy and Tommy at Nook’s Cranny daily. The prices definitely change once every day, when the shop opens, but in past games they have also shifted somewhat in the day, at midday. An important note is that Turnips must be sold before closing time on Saturday: you can’t put Turnips into the drop-off box. They can only be sold when the store is actively open. Ultimately, only you can decide when the right time to cash in your Turnips is, but we do have one key piece of advice: don’t let your Turnips go rotten. If you reach the following Sunday and haven’t sold them, they’re literally completely worthless – they’re not worth a penny. Selling on Saturday afternoon for a poor price and turning a loss is better than losing everything – so make sure you sell. Where to get the best Turnip prices in Animal Crossing: New HorizonsIf you want to really maximise your Turnip prices though, then it’s time to go online. While you might get uninspiring Turnip prices all week, there’s bound to be someone, somewhere with a Nook’s Cranny that’re paying out. Head over to the Turnip Exchange site (linked), and you’ll see tons of listings of people with great buying prices. Sometimes people just want the company, others ask for an entry fee to their island, but this way you’re always guaranteed a big profit. Sunday also sees the climax of Animal Crossing’s first event: Bunny Day. For more on Animal Crossing: New Horizons, here’s our full guide. We also have pages on fish prices in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as a list of bug catching locations and bug prices. The post Animal Crossing New Horizons best Turnip prices: how to sell turnips to play the stock market appeared first on VG247. | Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Prices – when and where to find every fish Posted: 01 May 2020 08:50 AM PDT Landing every fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and completing your collection is a cornerstone of your island experience. In this full guide, we’ll go over where and when to find each and every one – from guppies to sharks, from eels and rays to the illusive coelacanth – along with a list of the fish prices in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so you know which to prioritise for selling. We’ve also updated the month-to-month tables to include the fish prices too. First, before you can stuff any wriggling fish into your waiting pockets, you’ll need to craft a fishing rod at a DIY bench, or at Residential Services using Tom Nook’s station. If you’re out and about on another island, speak to Wilbur and he can put in a requisition order for tools – but will charge you in Nook Miles. As you acquire more DIY recipes, you’ll gain access to better tools. However, if you want the best of the best, you’ll need to make Golden Tools – which we have a full page on how to make here. Where to find fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons The fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons appear as shadows in the water in a variety of places. This includes the sea around your island, in rivers, as well as in-land ponds. Ponds are the small self-contained bodies of water which don’t lead anywhere else. That’s not all you have to contend with though. Some fish can only be found in ponds and rivers on cliff tops you reach with a ladder. The critterpedia specifies a different between clifftop rivers and ponds – however anecdotal evidence suggests you can find clifftop fish in any elevated water. As for fish that are found at the river mouth, this is where the running water meets the sea at the edge of your island. While some of the priciest fish can only be caught off the wooden piers that jut out onto the ocean.
Catch rare spawning fish – like Tuna and Blue Marlin at the pier – with fish bait While you can know where to find a fish, making it appear is another question entirely. Dig up the spouts of water you see on beaches to collect Manilla Clams. These are used to craft fish bait. Next, scatter the fish bait in the area you know the rare fish can spawn and be persistent. It probably won’t work first time. For pier fish like the Blue Marlin and Tuna, I’d suggest heading to a Nook Miles Ticket island, then scattering your bait off the pier next to Wilbur. Below is a list of all 80 species of fish you can catch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including the time of day they’re active, where on islands they pop up, and the months of the year they reveal themselves. Not all of the fish look the same when they’re underwater though. There are 6 types of shadow size, with a couple of variants. Eels are uniquely long and thin, whereas you can see the fin of big sharks and ocean sunfish. Otherwise, the sizes go in order of: tiny, small, medium, large, XL, and XXL. Our lists focus on where we live in the northern hemisphere. If you live in the southern hemisphere, you need to add six months onto the dates to find your fish prices. This data comes from the embedded YouTube video by BeardBear, so if you want a visual representation of what all of the fish look like when you catch them, start the following video from 6:43: Check out their channel, and the rest of the video for a list of all the bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If for whatever reason you can’t watch the video, the information is also in a table below. The post Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Prices – when and where to find every fish appeared first on VG247. | Animal Crossing: New Horizons Bug Prices – when and where to find every bug Posted: 01 May 2020 08:40 AM PDT Grab a net and empty your pockets, there’s a whole tiny world of bugs to collect! Here’s when and where you can find each and every bug and arachnid on your island, along with a list of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons bug prices so you know which to prioritise in your inventory. We’ve updated the month-to-month tables to include the prices of every bug too. Insects, mini-beasts, creepy-crawlies. Whatever you call them, collecting arachnids and bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons makes up an important part of your island experience. Whether you’re snagging bugs to sell at Nook’s Cranny or to gift to Blathers at the museum, it’s not always about where you look, but when. In a brutal turn of events for those of us who can only play when we get home from work, many of the bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons only appear at certain times of day. Even then, some are a lot rarer than others and don’t always spawn. What’s more, there’s a rotating calendar of scurrying creatures that only appear during specific months of the year. How to catch bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:With your net – flimsy or otherwise – equipped, you need to sneak up on bugs to catch them. If you hold down the A button, you will ready your net and walk extra-slowly towards your target. Releasing the A button will drop the net on the unsuspecting bug. There are several types of insectoid critter to find. They can buzz and fly around in the air, crawl along the floor, appear nestled in flowers, under rocks, on the side of different kinds of trees, fall out of trees when you shake them, on tree stumps when you cut them, and even – in the case of the flea – be seen jumping around on villager’s heads. To aid in your quest in becoming the ultimate entomologist, we’ve collected a table of when, where, and in which month you can find every single bug in Animal Crossing: New Horizons – as well as the prices you can sell the bugs for at Nook’s Cranny. We’ve focused on where we live in the northern hemisphere, if you live in the southern hemisphere add six months for which bugs are currently infesting your island! For a visual representation, this data comes from the following video by YouTuber BeardBear courtesy of some hard-core time travel, we’re sure. Give the video a watch and their channel a click. It also includes every fish, so to avoid spoilers, start at 2:02 and go until 6:41. The additional price and location data comes from the Animal Crossing wiki community under CC-BY-SA license, which means you’re also free to use and remix the data as you like. It’s not quite complete yet, but we’ll fill in the blanks as we play.

The highlight is the expressive 30cm replica statue of Eivor and her Drakkar. The high-end Ubicollectibles figure comes complete with axe and shield, and definitely captures the berserker spirit that was on display in the game’s bloody debut trailer. It also features the game’s female Eivor, though, like Odyssey before it, you’ll be able to choose between a male or female protagonist. There’s so much to digest about the game already – including longships, raiding and, er, rap battles – so be sure to have a browse through all our Assassin’s Creed Valhalla coverage. The Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Collector’s Edition is available exclusively through the Ubisoft Store on PS4, Xbox One and PC. In a patch released yesterday for Call of Duty: Warzone, Infinity Ward brought back Bounty Contracts and removed the Most Wanted contract which replaced it. Fans weren’t pleased with the initial replacement, and the developers listened. The Most Wanted contract saw players become a target for all teams on the map. If you survived, you received a redeployment for all of your fallen teammates. The patch also fixed Gunsmith Custom loadouts not appearing in matches, it adjusted the timer from 10 to 15 seconds in 3v3 Cranked Gunfight, adjusted out of bounds timer in Infected and the match start timer in Infected so players could join before the countdown ended. There was also a bug fix that caused players to get stuck while loading into a battle royale match. Thanks, Blue. You read that correctly. The original Star Wars Battlefront game from 2004 was updated today, May 1, 2020, and afforded a fully-functioning online multiplayer server. Check out the official (ludicrous) announcement on Steam. “Online multiplayer on Steam has been added to the game,” reads the official statement. The update also adds a variety of other changes to the game, including the addition of language support for French, Italian, German, and Spanish. This update is a curious one to say the least, arriving a whopping 16 years after Star Wars Battlefront initially launched, and almost entire year since the last official hotfix. If you check out the Steam page for Battlefront classic, you’ll notice that it’s a) sitting pretty at an average user score of 10/10, and b) currently 50% off. There’s something quite lovely about this update, though: in somewhat sadder news, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (the DICE one from 2017, not the 2005 original) recently received its last content update, so it’s almost as if things have come full circle. Something ends, something begins. If you’re after a Star Wars game that didn’t launch 16 years ago, check out our Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order review. If you reckon it’s up your alley, you’re in luck: Fallen Order recently got a massive price cut alongside other blockbuster games such as Battlefield and Titanfall 2. If you’ve already played Fallen Order, however, you’ll be glad to know that PC and N64 classic Star Wars Episode 1: Racer is scheduled to launch on PS4 and Nintendo Switch on May 12. It will set you back $14.99. The next era of Star Wars is set to kick off with a new game in 2021. While you’re waiting, check out our interview with Respawn on how Fallen Order integrated exploration into a combat-first lightsaber game. These include the ACQR subreddit (link), and searching “Animal Crossing QR Codes” on Twitter (link). Alternatively, you can create your own QR codes by uploading jpegs to ACToolKit (linked). In these places you’ll find fabric, tops, dresses, shorts, hats, and prints, all emblazoned with absolutely anything you can think of. To add some much needed culture to your island home, here’s how to unlock Redd’s Treasure Trawler, as well as tell whether his gallery of art is fake or real. Added post-launch in an update to New Horizons, Redd’s Treasure Trawler peddles masterworks from around the world – but there’s a catch. In Redd’s inventory are pieces of deviously crafted fake art, paintings and statues, which could fool even the most meticulous collector. Your old pal Blathers will be able Everything you can buy is an Animal Crossing version of a world-famous tour-de-force by some of the most respected practitioners in history – including van Gogh, da Vinci, and Rembrandt, as well as classical Japanese artists. Not only can you display these new art pieces in your home, but Blathers has opened a whole extra wing of the museum to show them off. By submitting pieces to the museum, you’ll get some extra information on their artist and creation.
How to get art and unlock Redd’s Treasure Trawler There’s actually quite an involved process to get Redd’s Treasure Trawler to visit with art and statues for your island. For a visual guide, this video from YouTuber TagBackTV shows the whole process, but we’ll write it out too: First, you need to make sure you’ve downloaded the latest update so that all of the content will appear in-game. Next, go to Blathers in the town Museum and he’ll have an announcement: a new fine art wing of the building is being planned. Blathers will ask you to keep an eye out for art to put on display, and to bring him any you find. Now wait until the next day and look around your island. You should find a new visitor – the sneaky orange fox, Redd. He’s managed to drop his “crazy” moniker from previous games, but he’s no less wily. Speak to Redd and he’ll offer you a totally legit piece of artwork for the low-low price of about 500,000 bells. When you baulk at the figure he’ll drop the sum 100-fold, and you’ll only have to pay about 5000 bells. From what I’ve seen, the first piece of art Redd sells you will be real. But different people will get different works. For example I got the Wistful Painting of Girl with a Pearl Earring, while TagBackTV in the video got the Academic Painting of The Vitruvian Man. Take him up on the cut-price deal, then go and show the art to Blathers. With the pristine painting now in his possession, Blathers will begin construction on the new-and-improved Museum. That means it’ll be closed for a full day while renovations take place. Once it’s done-and-dusted, you’ll be able to peruse the fine art room of the Museum. Head back outside for a celebratory ceremony if you want to have one, then look around your island. The devious Redd should appear again on your island, only this time when you speak to him he’ll say he’s dropped anchor on the northern shore of your island. Now you can head up to his Treasure Trawler to visit Redd’s art gallery showroom. It should be on the secluded beach that’s in the middle of the northern shore of your island – you’ll need a ladder to get there. Inside, there will be two furniture pieces, and four pieces of art. However you need to be selective; you can only buy one piece of art per day, although you can grab as many furniture pieces on top of that as you like. Redd is an island visitor like Gulliver and Saharah, so he won’t be there every day. Once you’ve purchased a painting or statue he’ll ship it to your mailbox to collect the next day. How to distinguish Redd’s fake artIf – like me – you haven’t had the luxury of whiling away the years on an art history degree, then the subtle discrepancies in the fake art pieces can be difficult to spot – especially the paintings. To tell Redd’s fake art from the real deal, you’re looking for differences in the Animal Crossing version to the real-life work. This can take the form of things that are missing, things that are added, things that have changed size, or things that have changed color from the original. One tip is to use the zoomed-in view you get of a piece before you buy to thoroughly inspect it. But you can also speak to your regular villagers for a bit of extra info. If any of them mention they bought a specific fake painting or statue from Redd then you know the one he’s trying to sell you is fake too! Refer to the lists below for a full run-down of what you need to know.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fake Paintings listBelow are all of the paintings that were datamined from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including their real-world counterparts. The differences between the authentic and fake paintings – as well as the statues – were reported on the r/AnimalCrossing subreddit by u/Acadiaa. You can download Hitman – The Complete First Season from the PS4 Store right now, although you’ll have to act quickly: the offer is only available until May 3, at which point Hitman will likely go back to its ordinary price. Hitman – The Complete First Season features all of the locations from season 1, and will take you to Paris, Sapienza, Marrakesh, Bangkok, Colorado, and Hokkaido. It also features all of the Challenges, Opportunities, Escalation Contracts, and more, as well as access to all future updates on new Elusive Targets and six bonus contracts from PS4-exclusive pack The Sarajevo Six. Unfortunately, if you already downloaded the Paris level – which has been free on more than one occasion in the past – you won’t be able to benefit from the entire season becoming free. As players over on ResetEra have noted, any accounts already linked to the free Paris level will be blocked from downloading this newer free pack. However, there is a workaround: if you opt to download each episode individually, as opposed to trying to download the entire season all at once, you should still be able to get season 1 for free, previous Paris download and all. Unlocking the ability to truly transform your island is a major milestone in your Animal Crossing career, and it comes right at the end of Animal Crossing New Horizons’ critical path. Once you’ve built all of the buildings, upgraded your house a little, invited a bunch of new animals to come live with you and prettied up your island, you’ll finally be able to invite K.K. Slider to visit your island and play a gig. Once K.K. has given his musical performance credits roll and you’re turned loose on Animal Crossing’s relentless, endless endgame – where Tom Nook no longer has missions for you so you can now spend the remainder of your island getaway doing whatever you want. Tom Nook has one last gift for you – a new app for your NookPhone. This is the Island Designer App, and this is the tool you use for Terraforming to create cliffs and rivers, plus the tool to create paths. How to make Paths in Animal Crossing: New HorizonsOnce you’ve unlocked the Island Designer App, it’s very simple to get started building paths. All you need to do is open up your Nookphone, then open the island designer app. Your villager will get a cute little hard hat to show that they’re in full-on island editing mode. You can then press plus to open a menu to choose your path. Initially you’ll only have access to a couple of types of path, but you can buy more path designs via the Nook Terminal in the Residential Services building. These new designs will set you back a few thousand Nook Miles each, and each design features a different formation of rock or wood for a bit of variety across your island. There’s nine different types of pre-set paths you can download from the Nook Terminal, and then there’s a final unlock which gives you the ability to create custom paths or scan in QR codes to bring in designs others have created. Villagers recognize paths, so if you build paved routing around your town, your villagers will walk along them like model citizens. Paths also count as a form of decoration, so having a neat, tidy, well-laid out island with lots of paths will contribute to your island rating. How to use Terraforming to Build or Remove Rivers and CliffsOnce you’ve unlocked the Island Designer App it’s not just about laying down a bit of paving and patios – you can also completely reshape your island using the terraforming tools. These terraforming tools can be used to adjust almost every factor of your island: you can add and remove rivers and cliffs, meaning you can reduce your island to an entirely flat plain and remodel from there if you so desire. The only bits of your island you can’t remove are the beaches and the rocks surrounding them, and you of course can’t touch or move the airport or residential services area and surrounding town square. In order to get the terraforming tools for creating or removing rivers and cliffs, just head to the Nook Terminal in residential services. Once again, this terminal is selling access to the tools you need: the water-scaping tool for creating rivers and the cliff-scaping tools for creating raised areas of land. Equipping the tools works the same way as with paths. You’ll take out a little shovel and can then use this to reshape your island significantly. In a development blog posted yesterday, 343 revealed it is “approaching solid alpha candidates” for both Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. The team said the early builds will go through “several parties of in-house testers” before Halo Insiders will be able to flight test. It seems development is moving along nicely then, (thanks, Neowin). In-progress screens for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST can be found below. On April 17, 343 Iudstries began flighting for Halo 2 and Halo 2: Anniversary on Steam and the Windows Store. The team invited around 100,000 Halo Insiders and 75,000 more for the final weekend. The team is currently working on fixing issues reported by testers such as audio and studdering problems, improvements to menu performance, bugs related to screen tearing and Vsync, and double key binding is undergoing a test pass. Actively in development are progression system improvements including Challenges, UI/UX improvements around navigation, roster, customization, and many more areas of the game. The team is also working on text chat improvements, additional mod support and video settings options, in-game fps cap, Steam account linking, and customization improvements. After improvements and issues are addressed, those looking forward to Halo 2 and Halo 2: Anniversary being added to The Master Chief Collection won’t have much more of a wait. Brawlers aren’t possible in the modern age, they said. They’re too boring, too simple. Yeah, Golden Axe is great, but remember how shit that modern revival was? It just doesn’t work. And Final Fight – love it – but the only way you’re gonna be able to play as those characters in 2020 is inside Street Fighter. But, nah. Streets of Rage 4. It happened. It works. It wasn’t even Sega that had the stones to do it in the end – instead smaller publisher Dotemu borrowed the IP and teamed up with indie studios Guard Crush Games and Lizardcube. It’s Sonic Mania all over again – fans who burned the flickering neon streets of the original Bare Knuckle trilogy on Mega Drive into their retinas are finally able to wield that knowledge for good. The result, like with Sonic Mania, is ridiculously excellent. To someone who grew up in the nineties, it’s practically a tonic for the soul. I want to be clear. Streets of Rage 4 is absolutely amazing no matter how you play it. It has an energy and heart about it that makes the 2D brawling beat-em-up action shine. In many ways it is a game that is more than the sum of its parts, where it gets away with being a simpler, more retro-styled experience by virtue of just feeling good. The music pumps, the visuals shine, and you feel like an absolute godly bad ass. But it can feel better. You see, Streets of Rage 4 has a combo system that actually begins to resemble fighting games. Don’t take my word for it – just look at the combo video in this embedded tweet. It’s disgusting. The natural conclusion from the addition of this sort of rich combo potential to the series is obvious: Streets of Rage 4 can be even better if played on an arcade stick. While the classic trilogy was designed first and foremost for Sega’s Mega Drive/Genesis hardware, an arcade lineage that makes this make sense does exist: the first two games got arcade releases on Sega’s Mega Play technology with a bumped-up difficulty level. I ended up playing Streets of Rage 4 this way by chance and force of habit. A couple of years ago I was bored in the spring. The rain didn’t seem like it was ever going to stop, so I was trapped indoors. I had a stack of old PC parts sitting around collecting dust, and some raw materials left over from home renovations. So I set myself a target: build an arcade machine. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done with free time, and I’ve long considered writing a primer on doing such a build for VG247. (Would you read one?) Inside the machine is a Windows PC for pixel perfect emulation of older arcade machines, but also a machine with enough power to run modern games. A fancy open-source UI from smarter people than I in the home arcade community makes browsing from game to game a seamless experience in a less painful front-end than on the current consoles. It’s honestly my favourite gaming device in the house, even if it is very specific in its uses. The truth is the machine is mostly used for old games – drunken games of NFL Blitz when friends are over, a stress-relieving round of Time Crisis or House of the Dead 2 – but the modern stuff is a nice bonus. So anything arcadey I pick up on this machine’s dedicated Steam account. Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter – and Streets of Rage 4 was a natural step. I don’t think I’d have thought of plugging an arcade stick in to play Streets of Rage 4 without the arcade cabinet acting as something of an incentive, but I’m glad I discovered how it feels to bash out combos on those big ol’ Sanwa Denshi buttons as if the game is part Marvel Vs. Capcom. SOR4 is plenty good on a normal controller and perhaps has a sweet authenticity on a Mega Drive or Saturn throwback controller, there is just something biblical about smashing massive buttons and seeing cool things happen. In many ways having a great, heavy slab of an oversized control method seems to exaggerate everything that makes Streets of Rage 4 so balls-to-the-wall brilliant. In a way to me it’s video games drawn back to their most simple and primitive. This brawler is by no means a game that requires the great, tight execution of fighting games – but sometimes a certain input method just feels right. It’s like that first moment you played an arcade light gun game with a proper, heavy, rattly-clacky recoil – it’s impossible to go back to a static, feedback-free gun after that. Anyway. Streets of Rage 4 is bloody amazing. If you’ve got an arcade stick, get it out for this game. If you haven’t, consider perusing our (admittedly out of date) arcade stick buyers guide. Or if you’re as crazy as me, consider building a full arcade cabinet. Some of these options are more extreme than others – but for a thrilling 90s throwback, they’re well, well worth it. Assassin’s Creed 2 is now free as part of a giveaway by Ubisoft. Players can download the game any time between now and May 5, at which point the download window will close at 7pm local time, regardless of regional disparity. It’s noted that, unfortunately, the game is not available in Russian. In order to install Assassin’s Creed 2 for free, you’ll also have to install the UPLAY PC app. Provided you’ve done that, the game should be added directly to your UPLAY library as soon as you click the download link. For those who haven’t played before, Assassin’s Creed 2 centres on Ezio Auditore da Firenze and is set during the Italian Renaissance. As well as traversing the rooftops along Venetian canals and studying the ways of the assassin, Ezio becomes best buds with Leonardo da Vinci, an indie painter you probably haven’t heard of. If you’re excited for Valhalla and want some quality, old-school Assassin’s Creed, download UPLAY and grab the series’ second entry free of charge. Or, if you want to do something even better, you can check out all of the Valhalla coverage we’ve compiled on VG247 dot com, like how Ubi has officially confirmed that both the male and female protagonists in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be considered canon, or how Valhalla officially has Viking rap battles. Also, and this is quite the development: the hidden blade is no longer hidden, because Eivor thought it looked cool and strapped it to his/her forearm. Apparently Valhalla will feature longships, raiding, and epic battles, but raiding will be much more nuanced than you might expect. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be set in the four kingdoms of England as well as Norway, and has been heralded by Ubisoft as the “ultimate Viking fantasy.” The post Assassin’s Creed 2 is free again after the Valhalla reveal appeared first on VG247. | We’ll get a look at Microsoft’s Xbox Series X games this summer Posted: 01 May 2020 06:11 AM PDT This summer, you can expect to get a look at what Microsoft’s first-party studios have planned for Xbox Series X.
Next week on May 7, we will get a first look at third-party Xbox Series X games on an episode of Inside Xbox. It has been confirmed that no titles from first-party studios will be shown. You can expect to see Xbox Game Studios to be shown off this summer, according to Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg. Xbox Game Studios has 15 game-makers on hand, all dedicated to making first-party games, so this summer expect some confirmations and maybe some surprises. We can definitely expect a new look Halo Infinite considering it’s out this holiday alongside the console, and it would be nice to receive an update on Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. It would also be nice if Microsoft finally confirmed the the long-rumored Fable 4 said to be in the works at Playground Games. We’ll cross our fingers but won’t get too excited about the possibility. When Inside Xbox airs on May 7 at 8am PT, 11am ET, 4pm BST, 5pm CET, you can expect a first look at Assassin’s Creed Valhalla gameplay. Ubisoft revealed the title yesterday with a nice cinematic trailer. We can only speculate as to what else will be shown, but Cyberpunk 2077 may be a safe bet. We’ll find out for sure next week. In a recent developer commentary trailer uploaded to YouTube, creative director Ashraf Ismail and narrative director Darby McDevitt broke down what players could expect from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla raids. While combat will be visceral when it occurs – to the extent that you can dual-wield almost anything, including shields – there will also be quieter moments embedded in the settling process, as well as a real sense of actively seeking a home. You can check out the full developer commentary trailer in the video embedded below. “A lot of what we know about the Vikings comes from the people who they raided,” McDevitt explains in the dev commentary. “The Viking age started at the end of the eighth century with an attack on Lindisfarne in England, and the English liked to write about it.” McDevitt goes on to explain that a lot of this writing exists as a result of the Saxonic church’s records, but Ubi actively sought other archaeological sources in order to corroborate evidence about how well the Vikings actually integrated into Saxonic culture. “What we’re showing here is that they’re building a community,” explains creative director Ashraf Ismail. “Not just raiding, but integrating into the local society.” “One thing that history doesn’t really say until you dig [in] is a lot of these people were farmers, traders, settlers, and they actually worked hard to integrate themselves,” he continues. “This is something that’s very important to the motivation of the game: building your settlement, growing it, [and] making the choices as a leader within this community.” That’s not to say this is a strictly pastoral game either. “Certainly a lot of the accounts are very brutal,” Ismail says. “What we’re trying to do is show the complete story of an entire culture. And when you actually jump forward to when our game is set, there’s a lot of settling going on.” “There’s not just raiding, there’s Norse coming over from Norway, from Denmark and settling in England,” he continues. “So what we’re going to portray in this game is that it’s not just about brutality and violence and wanton masochism. There’s a lot of thought that goes into these raids and battles, where the Norse settle, and the friends and alliances they make.” If you’re hungry for more details about Valhalla, you should make sure to check out the official Assassin’s Creed Valhalla trailer. Besides that, we’ve collected a whole bunch of details about what you can expect from Valhalla. Apparently it features the four kingdoms of England as well as Norway, and will offer players the “ultimate Viking fantasy.” Ubi has also officially confirmed that both the male and female protagonists will be considered canon, and that Valhalla officially has Viking rap battles. Also, the hidden blade is no longer hidden, and Valhalla will feature longships and epic battles. It happened last week and was livestreamed in Japanese, but today the full English translation was released, giving us some official details and clues as to what’s happening next patch. Here’s the details. The elephant in the room was the impact of COVID-19 on this patch’s release. The short answer is the patch “will be delayed by at least a month” from its intended release in June. FFXIV’s patch 5.3 will be released at the earliest in July, but even the developer wasn’t confident enough to give a new expected release date, and it could be even later. We do have a name, though. Reflections in Crystal will be the title of the new patch, and we have confirmation that “the Shadowbringers storyline enters its conclusion” with its story. A new dungeon has been confirmed for this patch’s storyline, with a new trial (and extreme) this patch likely also tying in. This means we’re likely seeing the end to the Crystal Exarch’s story, the First, and perhaps a final goodbye to Emet-Selch if the teaser image is anything to go by. Perhaps even more exciting for many is that this patch brings many of the A Realm Reborn changes fans have been asking for. Seven years old now, you’re still required to complete A Realm Reborn to move on to the expansions (unlike something like World of Warcraft, where you’re rushed along and caught up with everyone else at the start of expansions). So the development team have reworked it. Thirteen percent of all A Realm Reborn quests have been removed. Many quests’ meaningless steps of chatting to a random NPC for two lines of dialogue are gone. A Realm Reborn’s patch quests, a set of stories that range from world-shattering to utterly tedious, have been cut in places. The experience gain has been adjusted such that players won’t need to complete a single side quest (unless you’re really, really into 7-year-old MMORPG dialogue, for some inexplicable reason). Players can now fly in A Realm Reborn zones, too, making navigating those zones less of a chore. Outside the main storyline and ARR updates, there’s new Sorrow of Werlyt (that’s the Ruby Weapon series, for those playing purely for the FF7 references) quests too, although no trial this time, just a solo combat encounter. Perhaps most interesting to those looking for references, though, is the Puppet’s Bunker, the new 24-person Alliance Raid, continuing the NieR: Automata crossover series of quests. As a quick recap, 9S from NieR: Automata is on FFXIV’s alternate world The First for unknown reasons, creating lots of dead 2Bs, controlling the machines and generally being evil. Now, it seems he’s recreating the bunker from NieR: Automata, a perfectly normal endeavour. There’s new upgradable weapon content, the Bozjan Southern Front (Shadowbringers’ equivalent to The Forbidden Land from the Eureka series), a ‘large-scale’ (100-odd players) instance that will help you upgrade the Resistance Weapons from patch 5.2, although it’s entirely optional, and there’s another method to upgrading them that they’ve not spoken about yet. And finally, there’s a whole new kind of Trial available. This is the first time this expansion that a new difficulty tier has been introduced, and it’s called an Unreal Trial, a fight where primals from A Realm Reborn are scaled up to level 80 and re-balanced. This patch it’ll be Shiva, but that’s all we know: the teaser image features Khloe Aliapoh in the background, so it’ll likely be done through her, which is supported by the fact completing this trial gives access to a minigame called Faux Hollows, which, you guessed it, there are no details on. There’s also new quality of life changes for crafters in the form of Trial Synthesis (which allows for testing a crafting recipe without using materials), plus new Ishgardian Restoration objectives for crafters to sink their teeth into. A new Tribe, the Dwarves of Shadowbringers, will give crafters new daily quests too. Expect a lot more lali-hos. Going by previous cycles, expect the next Live Letter in a few weeks to show key art and possibly a trailer, but given ongoing events around the coronavirus we’re in uncharted territory, so maybe just bide your time re-reading these. Of course, given it’s likely the next patch or two might include mention of Black Rose, a deadly airborne weapon that kills those who breathe it in… yeah, maybe wait a month or two, development team. Speak to Tom Nook at Residential Services to collect your May Day Ticket for a new island adventure. As ol’ Tom says, May Day is when we celebrate people who work hard, but it’s your brain that will be working harder than anything with the devious May Day Ticket maze. To help out, we’ve put together a walkthrough summarizing the Animal Crossing: New Horizons May Day Ticket Maze solution to show you the path you need to take to get the most out of the event. You can only visit the May Day Maze once! But once you’re done, you’ll net yourself around 25,000 bells and a unique item. You have until May 7 to complete the May Day Maze, so don’t sweat over rushing to get it done. Also, don’t worry about clearing your inventory or bringing tools along with you. Your pockets will be emptied before departure. Collecting the May Day TicketTo get your very own May Day Ticket, visit Tom Nook at Residential Services. As you speak to him, he’ll offer a little explanation of the May Day event before directing you to your island airport. Go and speak to Orville at the airport check-in desk and say “I want to fly”. With that, you’ll be able to cash in your May Day Ticket and have Wilbur get you started on the island. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – May Day Ticket Maze SolutionIf you’d prefer a visual walkthrough, we’ve embedded a video from YouTuber AbdallahSmash026 – which shows a similar route to the one we took to the prize! The crux of the May Day Ticket Maze solution is that you need to use the items you pick up off the floor to get through to the other side. It seems tough at first, but once you realise what you can and can’t do it’s simple enough. First off, pick up the shovel in front of you and you come into the maze and dig up the shrub on your left to get to the fruit. You can now eat the fruit, then dig up the tree in front of you to clear a path. Next, jump over the hole since there’s nothing on the other side. From there, go right and jump over the three holes to your right, then head up and pick up the three pieces of wood on the ground. Now go left from the three pieces of wood, then up (right) at the junction. Then jump across the next hole, then follow the path until you can pick up a tree branch. Continue around and jump across the next hole. You can now collect the resources on the other side of the three holes you jumped over earlier. There are three tree branches, and a stone, in the middle you also get a worn axe. After you’ve picked up the axe, hop back across the holes to the left, and go to the tree at the top of the maze you passed earlier that’s blocking two pieces of fruit and a branch. It needs to be the one at the top with the branch – not just the one in the middle with two pieces of fruit – so you’ve got enough branches to build something. With the axe you can now chop it down to a stump, then sit on the stump to get over to the other side and collect the resources. Go back over to the right-hand side of the line of three holes, where there’s the rock blocking your way. You can now eat a fruit and break the rock – this gets you DIY recipes for an axe and flimsy axe – you can then eat a second piece of fruit and dig up the tree blocking the crafting table. At the crafting table, make a flimsy axe, then come out and go back around to the first in the row of three holes and jump across, then go down and jump across the second hole. You can now eat another piece of fruit and dig up the rock to get an iron nugget. Do not eat another piece of fruit and dig up the tree on the other side, you need it for later. With the iron nugget in hand, retrace your steps back to the crafting table and build a proper axe. Now hop left back across the three holes to the tree blocking two more pieces of fruit, chop it down with the axe then shimmy over to get to them. With the axe and fruit in hand return to where you got the iron nugget, chop down the tree, shimmy over, then jump across the hole on the other side to get to the last piece of fruit. Jump across the last hole to get to the row of three trees. Chop each tree down and climb over the stumps. As you come out of the maze, dig up the shrubs on your left to grab some bell vouchers. Then dig the shrubs to get to the top side of the maze. You can now go around the left-hand side, eat your three pieces of fruit and break the three rocks to get even more bell vouchers. Finally, talk to the villager at the end. He’ll introduce himself as Rover, so say Tom Nook sent you and he’ll give you Rover’s Briefcase as a reward for reaching the end of the May Day Ticket Maze! That’s everything done, so head back to your island. Here you can collect your Bell Tickets and Rover’s briefcase from your mailbox! The first of May doesn’t just bring this event, but tons of new critters too. In my head it goes a little like this: Coming straight out or Norway, That Christian looks sore, eh? You see my longship out the window now I’m busting down your doorway. I’ll pop an axe in yo ass, I’ll give you Viking sass, I’ll steal shit from anyone who dares attend Mass. I’m from a land that’s so icy, My food is quite spicy, My longship gang of raiders never hits the same town twicey. Sorry, I’ll stop now. Ubisoft laid out some of the minigames on the official Assassin’s Creed Valhalla website. As well as hunting, fishing, and drinking, you’ll be free to take part in flyting – Norse rap battles. Here’s the description: “Sail across the icy North Sea to discover and conquer the broken kingdoms of England. Immerse yourself in activities like hunting, fishing, dice, and drinking games, or engage in traditional Norse competitions like flyting – or, as it’s better known, verbally devastating rivals through the art of the Viking rap battle.” Have a read of what The Vintage News has to say about Viking flyting: “Flyting is the name for a ritualistic, poetic insult exchange, and was mainly practiced between the 5th and 16th centuries. The word comes from the Old English word flītan, which means ‘quarrel’ (which itself comes from the Old Norse word flyta meaning ‘provocation’). Similar to the modern ‘rap battle,’ the ancient flyting exchanges would often become provocative, and include ‘accusations of cowardice or sexual perversion’.” I didn’t think I could be more excited about this game, but I am now.
Elsewhere, Ubisoft spoke about why the hidden blade isn’t hidden anymore in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Oh, and you’ll be able to dual wield almost anything. You’ll be able to play as a male or female Eivor, and either choice is actually canonical to the story. When you’ve made your choice, you’ll be free to travel across some of Norway, as well as the four kingdoms of England in the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla map. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X this holiday. We’ll get our first look at gameplay on May 7, in Microsoft’s Xbox showcase. You can watch the full CGI trailer here. The post Assassin's Creed Valhalla features playable Viking rap battles – no, seriously appeared first on VG247. | Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s map features the four Kingdoms of England, as well as some of Norway Posted: 01 May 2020 04:10 AM PDT Set during 873 AD, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is focused around the Viking raids on England, as well as their eventual settlement on the land. Because of that, the game will feature a massive chunk of England’s rolling hills and an icy Norwegian coastline. “England itself was fairly fractured at this time, with many different kings that rule over different parts of it,” narrative director Darby McDevitt said during a recent developer commentary. The Vikings used this to their advantage with successful longship raids, using England’s rivers to hit targets with guerrilla warfare. But they weren’t just interested in raiding – many Vikings wanted to settle on the land, and Valhalla will depict that. The RPG is focused on Eivor, a Viking leader who wanted to find a new home for their people. As Eivor, you will make choices about how to build these settlements, as well as other choices that will impact the lives of your settlers. It’s an RPG with base building mechanics across a vast and varied map featuring the four kingdoms of England. “if you look at England now and see any town that ends with “thorpe” or “by”, that probably means it was a Viking town, or Norse or Dane town,” McDevitt explained. “So we know just by the number of them – hundreds of these towns – that they were very successful settlers.” The CGI reveal trailer focuses on one of England’s most formidable kings of the time, Alfred the Great. “He’s the king of Wessex, the southernmost kingdom in England at the time,” creative director Ashraf Ismail said. “There’s also three others – Mercia, Northumbria and East Anglia – that we deal with. “[King Alfred] specifically is known for being one of the most staunch opponents of the Viking invasion. He was the strongest of the kings. He was able to push them back for a time and deal with them, whereas the other kings would crumble under the onslaught of the Danes and the Norse.”
I’m personally excited about this setting because it might mean my home town gets its time to shine. “In just one known Viking camp, located on the banks of the River Trent at Torksey, Lincolnshire, thousands of Vikings gathered to wait out the winter of 872-873 A.D,” according to History.com. The camp was a massive 136 acres, and will surely be depicted in the game. As well as those four English kingdoms, the game begins in a Norwegian settlement. No doubt this will be where our hero decides their people need to find a new place to call home. “The journey starts in Norway and it will eventually lead to England, where again it’s about this idea of settling the people and building this thriving settlement,” Ismail explained. Elsewhere, Ubisoft spoke about why the hidden blade isn’t hidden anymore in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Oh, and you’ll be able to dual wield almost anything. Ubisoft Montreal creative director Ashraf Ismail described the functionality of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla longships in a recent developer commentary trailer uploaded to YouTube. You can check out the full commentary in the video embedded below, where Ismail also gets into what a Vikingesque battle actually entails. “The Viking longships was a technology that was unique to the Norse and the Danes and the Vikings in this time period,” Ismail explains, breaking down why longships were so significantly advantageous in the first place. “If I was to give a metaphor, I would say: imagine that you have this empty highway – rivers – and you have a Ferrari and you can drive down this highway with nobody around you and no one able to chase you.” “This is what gave Vikings the capacity to get so deep into the land, behind enemy lines. These ships carried cargo and raiders. The raiders were warriors that were proficient in combat. They were able to get in, steal a lot of stuff, and run away.” “There’s raiding, which is much more about hit and run – get into a specific place, steal their riches, create a bit of chaos so people flee and give them time to steal,” Ismail continues. However, the trailer (embedded above) also depicts a large-scale battle. “This time period is known for a lot of big battles between the Vikings and the Saxons,” Ismail explains. “There were many battles, and that is something we do have in the game. Players can go raiding in their longship with their raiders, and there are moments in the game where we use really big, epic scale battles on battlefields or in fortifications. It was a really big part of the history during this time.” We’ve already compiled a boatload of other Assassin’s Creed Valhalla details if you want to sail further into Information Harbour. However, before you read anything else you should make sure to check out the official Assassin’s Creed Valhalla trailer. After that you can dive into all of the other details, like how Valhalla will be set in Dark Ages England, and is apparently going to offer players the “ultimate Viking fantasy.” It’s also been confirmed that both the male and female protagonists will be considered canon, and that you can dual-wield almost anything in Valhalla – even shields! Also – and this is an interesting one – did you know that the hidden blade is no longer hidden in Valhalla? The post Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s will feature longships, raiding, and epic battles appeared first on VG247. | Assassin’s Creed Valhalla lets you dual wield almost anything – even two shields, if you want Posted: 01 May 2020 03:40 AM PDT It was recently confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla dual wield options will allow you to double up on almost anything – even two shields, if you fancy. Creative director Ashraf Ismail mentioned Valhalla’s dual-wielding system in a recently unveiled developer commentary trailer, which you can check out in the video embedded below. Ismail specifically mentions that you can choose to dual-wield shields if you want, which could hypothetically allow you to charge into battle like the devastating bulwark of berserk you are. “A throwing axe is an ability you have in the game,” Ismail mentions in the developer commentary. This will come as welcome news to God of War fans, who likely developed a certain adroitness for Kratos’ iconic Leviathan Axe in Santa Monica Studio’s most recent tale of god-slaying. “Dual wielding is a big part of the game and it’s very open – you can pretty much dual wield all combinations of weapons that we have. If you want to dual wield two shields, we’ll let you do that.” Ismail also discusses other aspects of Valhalla’s combat system in the dev commentary, explicitly noting that fights will be particularly brutal. “The combat of this period – if we’re going to make a Viking game, the combat needs to be visceral,” he explains. “It needs to be quite brutal, so you meet quite impressive enemies. We call [these guys] the ringleaders, a leader on the battlefield who is able to rally the troops and has some unique capacities. He’s very armoured.” Luckily, you can be very armoured too if you opt to rock akimbo shields. If you’re hungry for more Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, fret not, for we have all of the details. Your first point of order should be to check out the official Assassin’s Creed Valhalla trailer. Once you’ve checked that off the list, read up on how the events of Valhalla are set to transpire in Dark Ages England, where you will apparently be able to play through the “ultimate Viking fantasy.” It’s also been confirmed that there are 15 studios working on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and that both the male and female protagonists will be considered canon. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be included in the Inside Xbox presentation scheduled for May 7, which will showcase a range of Xbox Series X games. The post Assassin’s Creed Valhalla lets you dual wield almost anything – even two shields, if you want appeared first on VG247. | Here’s why the hidden blade is no longer hidden in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Posted: 01 May 2020 03:37 AM PDT If you watched yesterday’s CGI trailer for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, you might have noticed the reveal of the hidden blade. Except it’s not really hidden anymore, being strapped instead to protagonist Eivor’s forearm and in plain view. Creative director Ashraf Ismail revealed the reason for this in a developer commentary video. Turns out, Eivor just thought it was too cool to hide. “We’re building a Viking fantasy,” Ismail explained. “We wanted players to live in the boots of a Viking warrior and to fully live within that fantasy, but this is within the Assassin’s Creed world. And so, in our journey Eivor does meet with Assassins. Eivor doesn’t necessarily know what that means, but there is some kind of common ground that they have and these are people that Eivor will work with. “At some point, Eivor does receive a hidden blade – that’s something that happens quite early on. We don’t want to get into any spoiler territory or explain why the connection is there, but it is something that’s very important and significant to the journey of this game. And so when Eivor receives this hidden blade, Eivor puts it on and believes that this is such a kick-ass weapon so why would you want to hide it from your enemies?”

Ubisoft also revealed that you’ll be able to play as a male or female Eivor, and either choice is actually canonical to the story. Details for the Pokemon Go May update were uploaded to Reddit, featuring information about which Pokemon will have a chance to be shiny this month. Check out the post below, which features a screenshot displaying all of the relevant details. May Update from TheSilphRoad
The update leads with the fact that Team Rocket has been defeated, and Giovanni is going to take several months to get over himself for losing. No more Rocket Research for a minute. In relation to potential shinies, it seems that Shinx will be made available as a Research Breakthrough encounter and will come with bonus Shinx candies, converting your dreams of a Luxray into reality. This Shinx also has a chance to be shiny, which means you could potentially end up with a Luxray that shares its coloration with Umbreon, although with slightly less inherent edginess. The Pokemon Spotlight hours for May have also been listed. Each Spotlight Hour will take place between 6pm and 7pm in local time regardless of your region. The Spotlight hours are as follows: - On May 5 you will be able to encounter potentially shiny Shellder, with the special bonus of 2x catch Stardust
- On May 12 you will be able to encounter potentially shiny Sunkern, with the special bonus up 2x catch XP.
- On May 19 you will be able to encounter potentially shiny Poochyena, with the special bonus up 2x catch Candy (Mightyena galore)
- On May 26 you will be able to encounter potentially shiny Bronzor, with the special bonus of 2x transfer Candy
This Pokemon Go May update covers the period between May 1 and June 1, and all five Pokemon mentioned above will have a chance to appear in their shiny forms at least temporarily throughout the month. In related news, the Pokemon Go Kanto Throwback Challenge is now available, as is Pokemon Go remote raiding. For the latter, we’ve put together a handy Pokemon Go Raid guide.
