Turkey Has The Fastest Covid-19 Infection Rate In The World

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 08:45 PM PDT

The Guardian: Turkey's Covid-19 infection rate rising fastest in the world

More than 3,000 new cases reported daily but ErdoÄŸan insists normal work must go on

Turkey's number of coronavirus infections is increasing by more than 3,000 a day, reaching 30,217 since the first case was confirmed four weeks ago.

Reported fatalities remain much lower than other badly hit countries, at 649, but the infection figures suggest Turkey has the fastest rising number of confirmed cases in the world.

President Recep Tayip ErdoÄŸan, usually no stranger to heavy-handed tactics, has resisted calls by doctors' unions and opposition politicians to order people to stop going to work and stay home, insisting that the "wheels of the economy must keep turning".

Turkey is still recovering from a 2018 currency crash, leading economists and policymakers to fear a coronavirus-induced recession is inevitable.

WNU Editor: The numbers are truly disturbing. From about 200 cases three weeks ago, to 1,000 deaths and 47,000 cases today. (John Hopkins University). And the growth is still exponential. Turkey also houses millions of refugees from the many conflicts in the Middle East, and their health status is not good. One can only imagine what the numbers are going to look like three weeks from now.

Germany Permits Iranian Banks Sanctioned By The U.S. To Operate

Jerusalem Post: Germany allows US sanctioned Iranian 'terror' banks to operate

A number of the banks were sanctioned by the US in a bid to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions are operating within Germany.

The organization United Against Nuclear Iran published a report on Tuesday, disclosing that German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government is permitting Iranian banks sanctioned by the US government to operate within the federal republic.

"The oldest Iranian bank operating in Germany is Bank Melli, established in 1965 in Hamburg. It is also Iran's national bank, wholly owned by the Government of Iran (GOI), and its biggest company by revenue. The US Treasury sanctioned Bank Melli in 2018 for its support of the IRGC, having enabled the IRGC and its affiliates to move funds inside and outside Iran," wrote the report's author, Daniel Roth.

Beware Of Chinese N-95 Masks

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:06 PM PDT

IBTimes: Pakistan gets Chinese underwear as N95 masks

Pakistan said 'China ne choona laga diya' as they claim China ended up sending N95 masks which are made out of underwear to Pakistan, according to a Pakistan news channel.

In a rather hilarious and an uncanny incident, China, the now 'fair-weathered' friend of Pakistan, had promised 'top quality' medical aid to Pakistan for fighting the deadly coronavirus infection has ended up sending N95 masks made out of underwear. China actually duped Pakistan as its 'top quality' aid failed to be of any help for Pakistan.

Reporting the news, the anchor of the Pakistani news channel said, "China ne chuna laga diya," which in English means China actually conned us (Pakistan).

This also pointed at the lackadaisical approach of the Pakistani Government as these masks were sent to the hospitals without checking the consignment that came in from China. Pakistan's friend China had promised to send top-quality N-95 masks to the country affected by Coronavirus.

In a Tweet posted by Maj (Retd) Gaurav Arya, it is stated that China sent N95 masks made out of underwear. This was reported by the Pakistan media.

U.S. Media Double Down On Reports That U.S. Intelligence Warned President Trump In November Of An Impending Coronavirus Pandemic

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:11 PM PDT

President Donald Trump called a report on what spies learned in November a 'Hoax'

Daily Mail: Now U.S. spies are reported to have produced a 'situation report' at the end of November hinting at a public health crisis in China after seeing evidence of increased activity at hospitals

* This week has featured a flurry of reports on information U.S. intelligence picked up about a spreading outbreak in China's Wuhan province in November
* It wasn't until December 31 that China informed global health officials of the new coronavirus outbreak
* Information was included in President's Daily Brief in January after weeks of vetting
* Spies gained information gained through human intel, computers, and satellites
* Defense officials back on ABC News report that December report featured intel dating back to November
* Trump hit back Thursday night, calling it 'fake news' and a 'Hoax'
* New report says spies collected raw intelligence in November and put it in 'situation report'
* This week it was revealed trade advisor Peter Navarro penned doomsday memos about the coronavirus in January and February

U.S. spies officials collected raw intelligence about a developing health situation in Wuhan, China in November and put it into a report that got shared with federal officials – but didn't warn that a pandemic was forming, according to the latest disclosure in how the administration learned about the coronavirus.

The report of a more calibrated November caution by U.S. spies comes after an onslaught of pushback from the Trump administration to an earlier report this week that spies caught wind of the developing coronavirus and drafted a memo that made it to the White House with the November information.

President Trump called that report a 'Hoax' in a tweet very early Friday morning.

WNU Editor: Here we go again. Just like the mainstream media's Russian-collusion coverage for almost two and a half years, a major news network (ABC News) is using the same playbook, but this time they are saying that anonymous sources are telling them that US intelligence was aware of a medical-health crisis in China in November and tried to warn the White House. Sighhh .... regular readers of this blog know that this blog predicted this doubling down yesterday .... U.S. Medical Intelligence Chief Denies US Media Reports That There Was A Memo Warning About A Coronavirus Outbreak In November 2019 (April 9, 2020). My only advice to ABC News and news outlets like the the Daily Mail is the following. When it comes to using anonymous sources on President Trump, your record sucks. You have to do better.

Update: This is the second article that I have read in the past week that provides concrete evidence on when the Covid-19 virus was first detected .... Signs that coronavirus was spreading in Wuhan earlier than thought, study finds (SCMP). Data that was available to no until now.

MANAGUA (Reuters) - During Nicaragua's devastating civil war in the 1980s, youthful revolutionary Daniel Ortega toured every town in the Central American nation, clad in his green Sandinista uniform.

Now in his second stint as president, the 74-year-old leftist leader has disappeared from public view for nearly a month, raising questions about his health and whereabouts as the world reels from the spread of the coronavirus.

As in 2014, another time he dropped off the map, his absence has even prompted speculation he may have died.

The government did not respond to a request for comment on the reasons for Ortega's absence, his health or whether he is alive.

However, a government official close to Ortega said he was alive, speaking on condition of anonymity.

China Is Preparing To Launch Its 2nd Assault Carrier

Forbes: Launch Of China's 2nd Assault Carrier Appears Imminent

Barely six months after the launch of China's first amphibious assault carrier, there are signs that the second ship is about to hit the water. The Type-075 ship is a large helicopter carrier for amphibious landings, similar to the U.S. Navy's America Class. A video shared on Chinese social media on Thursday shows the new ship nearing completion in the dry dock. Based the launch preparations for the first ship, she appears almost ready for launch, within a week or two. Previously I was able to predict the launch of the first carrier to within 24 hours.

The front of the new carrier can be seen in the below video stills, to the left of the first carrier which is already in the water:

Newsweek: China Holds Navy Drills in Pacific As U.S. Aircraft Carriers Hit by Coronavirus

The Chinese navy recently launched a series of naval drills to shore up its coastal capabilities in the Pacific, a region where China's goals frequently clash with those of the United States.

The move comes as U.S. aircraft carriers suffered from outbreaks of the novel coronavirus disease that has already infected hundreds of sailors.

The People's Liberation Army deployed Type 22 missile boats to the East Sea for four days of live-fire exercises late last month involving warfighting scenarios that an unnamed military expert told the ruling Chinese Communist Party's Global Times newspaper on Thursday were designed to boost the vessels' coast combat skills. Maneuvers also reportedly involved countermine, damage control and rescue operations.

Chad Claims It Has Killed 1,000 Militants After A Week Of Fighting

VOA: 1,000 Boko Haram Fighters Killed in Raid, Chad Army Reports

Chadian army officials report military forces have killed about 1,000 Boko Haram extremists in an operation on the islands of Lake Chad.

In a video statement released late Thursday, Army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermandoa said the eight-day operation cleared the extremists from the islands in a vast area between Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon.

He said 52 Chadian army soldiers also were killed and nearly 200 others wounded during the operation.

The move follows a Boko Haram attack last month on a Bohoma army base. More than 92 soldiers were killed. Army officials called it the deadliest attack ever on the nation's forces.

Boko Haram extremists have killed tens of thousands and forced millions from their homes during their more than decade-long insurgency.

Nature Magazine Apologizes To China For Linking Covid-19 With Wuhan And China

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:15 PM PDT

SCMP: Coronavirus: Nature magazine apologises for reports linking Covid-19 with China

* Scientific journal admits it 'was an error on our part' to erroneously link the pathogen with Wuhan and China
* 'It would be tragic if stigma, fuelled by the coronavirus, led Asia's young people to retreat from international campuses,' it says

British scientific journal Nature has apologised for associating Covid-19 with China in its reporting, saying that early coverage of the global health crisis by itself and other media had led to racist attacks on people of Asian descent around the world.

In an article published on Tuesday, the publication said that the World Health Organisation's announcement on February 11 that the official name for the pneumonia-like virus would be Covid-19 had been an implicit reminder to "those who had erroneously been associating the virus with Wuhan and with China in their news coverage – including Nature".

"That we did so was an error on our part, for which we take responsibility and apologise," it said.

The World Health Organization Wants More Money To Combat The Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says we still have a long way to go in the fight against the pandemic (Reuters: Denis Balibouse

ABC News Online: World Health Organisation announces plan to appeal for more than $1.5 billion from international governments

The World Health Organisation is preparing to launch an appeal for more than $US1 billion [$1.5 billion] to fund operations against the coronavirus pandemic.

Now 100 days since the WHO was alerted to the first case of COVID-19, and after more than $US800 million [$1.2 billion] having already been pledged or received, the organisation says it will release a revised strategy plan and new funding appeal.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus believes the pandemic is much more than a health crisis, requiring a whole-of government & society response.

"For the past 100 days, our unwavering commitment has been to serve all people of the world with equity, objectivity and neutrality. That will continue to be our sole focus in the days, weeks and months ahead," Dr Tedros said.

The appeal and strategy plan will commence in coming days.

This U.S. Company Owns The World's Most Advanced Private Air Force After Buying 46 F/A-18 Hornets From Australia

Warzone/The Drive: This Man Owns The World's Most Advanced Private Air Force After Buying 46 F/A-18 Hornets

We talked to the owner of Air USA about probably the most incredible private aircraft purchase of all time and the future of his adversary business.

For the last 30 years, Don Kirlin has been flying for the airlines, working on real estate deals, setting up the world's biggest skydiving meets, and building a private air force the likes of which even he has a hard time believing is possible. Just last month, The War Zone was among the first to report that his company would be purchasing multiple squadrons worth of surplus Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18 Hornets to be used in the contractor adversary air support role here in the United States. Not only do we have all the details on that purchase, which is even more impressive than it initially seemed, but we talked at length with the entrepreneur owner of Air USA, located in Quincy, Illinois, about his company's past and what is turning into a remarkable, if not downright historic, future.

Is A Mach 5 SR-72 Spy Plane Flying In The Sky?

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:06 AM PDT

Jack O'Banion posted this image of a digital 'twin' of the craft, saying 'Without the digital transformation, the aircraft you see there could not have been made.'

Caleb Larson, National Interest: Could a Mach 5 SR-72 Spy Plane Already Be in the Sky?

If anything about the SR-71 program can be gleaned, it is that the existence of the SR-72 will likely be unacknowledged for some time after it is operational. For all we know, the SR-72 could already be in the air.

In the late 1990s, the SR-71 Blackbird — the world's fastest, highest-flying plane ever — was retired. Perhaps preemptively.

Slow Satellites

Although satellite reconnaissance has largely overtaken the role of spy planes, they are not always a perfect solution, particularly when intelligence information is needed very quickly. Satellites can take up to 24 hours to get into the correct place in their orbit, which is considerably slower than the SR-71 Blackbird, which can make LA to D.C. in just over an hour.

The other drawback to satellites is their potentially vulnerable to attack. Since they travel in relatively predictable orbits, countries hostile to a satellite can potentially track their flight path and bring them down in the event of war with the manufacturing country — a crucial vulnerability.

While Unmanned Aerial Vehicles have been used extensively for reconnaissance, they are not necessarily very fast, and unless effectively stealthy, they are very vulnerable to attack.

Business Insider/Military.com: An A-10 Thunderbolt made an emergency landing in Georgia with its landing gear up

* An A-10 Thunderbolt made an emergency landing "without its landing gear extended" at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia on Tuesday.
* The pilot, who declared an in-flight emergency, was not injured, and base leaders are investigating the incident.

An A-10 Thunderbolt II made a belly landing at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, after its pilot declared an in-flight emergency Tuesday during a routine training flight, according to the Air Force.

The A-10C, assigned to the 75th Fighter Squadron at the base, touched down "without its landing gear extended," officials with the 23rd Wing said in a news release.

Photos of the mishap surfaced on the unofficial, but popular Air Force Facebook page Amn/Nco/Snco, showing the A-10 close-air support aircraft resting on its underside on the flight line as airmen and emergency crews responded to the incident.

Chinese Presidnet Xi Will Survive The Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic

Francesco Sisci, Asia Times: Forget a coup against Chinese President Xi

Chinese leader may have made initial mistakes in responding to the virus threat but his preeminent position is still secure.

At the beginning of the epidemic in late January and early February, much of the foreign press argued that the coronavirus was China's moment of crisis that would trigger political turmoil to bring down the Beijing government.

As this narrative faded away before the massive and effective government response to the virus, a new narrative has emerged – that paramount leader Xi Jinping is under threat because many Chinese officials blame him for the outbreak of the epidemic and are about to mount a coup to topple him.

Japan Will Now Pay Its Companies To Leave China

SCMP: Japan to pay firms to leave China, relocate production elsewhere as part of coronavirus stimulus

* More than US$2 billion of the country's record economic stimulus package will be used to help companies move production away from China
* The move coincides with what should have been a celebration of friendlier ties between the two countries, before the pandemic struck

Japan has earmarked US$2.2 billion of its record economic stimulus package to help its manufacturers shift production out of China, as the coronavirus disrupts supply chains between the major trading partners.

The extra budget, compiled to try to offset the devastating effects of the pandemic, includes 220 billion yen (US$2 billion) for companies shifting production back to Japan and 23.5 billion yen for those seeking to move production to other countries, according to details of the plan posted online.

The move coincides with what should have been a celebration of friendlier ties between the two countries.

WNU Editor: This is not going to be enough. China is playing hardball with its customers right now. Threatening them that if they do not sign 3-4-5 year contracts, they will be cut-out of the supply chain effective immediately. Because it takes too long to establish a plant/operation in another country, many firms are being forced to sign these agreements. Talk about having a gun put to your head.

Canadian Military Intelligence Issued Warnings About The Wuhan - Covid-19 Coronavirus Outbreak In January

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 08:10 AM PDT

CBC: Canadian military intelligence unit issued warning about Wuhan outbreak back in January

News of the MEDINT unit's work is raising new questions about what the government knew and when.

A small, specialized unit within the Canadian military's intelligence branch began producing detailed warnings and analysis about the emergence of the deadly novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China in early January, CBC News has learned.

The medical intelligence (MEDINT) cell within Canadian Forces Intelligence Command is tucked away on the edges of the country's security and defence establishment.

It has a mandate to track global health trends and contagion outbreaks to predict how they'll affect military operations, but its assessments are heavily influenced by reports from the Five Eyes Intelligence partners, including the U.S. military's National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI).

For at least one of the country's leading intelligence experts, the fact that the unit was tracking the COVID-19 outbreak and reporting on it raises serious questions about information-sharing within the federal government — and its possible failure to heed early warning signs.

Should The U.S. Use Privateers To Fight Chinese Aggression At Sea?

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:06 AM PDT

The threat of privateers to China's maritime economy could strengthen deterrence and possibly prevent a war. New York Times

SCMP: US military researchers call for use of privateers against China

* Magazine published by US Naval Institute features articles titled 'Unleash the Privateers!' and 'US Privateering Is Legal'
* But any such move would provoke a retaliation from China, military watchers say

The United States should encourage the use of privateers to fight Chinese aggression at sea, according to a pair of articles in magazine produced by the US Naval Institute.

The reports – titled "Unleash the Privateers!" and "US Privateering Is Legal", and published in the April issue of Proceedings – suggest the US government issue letters of marque – a commission authorising privately owned ships (privateers) to capture enemy merchant ships.

The authors – Mark Cancian, a retired US Marine Corps colonel and senior adviser at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Brandon Schwartz, a former CSIS media relations manager – said that China's larger merchant fleet represented an asymmetric vulnerability with the US, and an attack on China's global trade would undermine its entire economy and threaten its stability.

Such a campaign would be a legal and low-cost way to contain China's power rise on the sea, they said, adding that it could prevent, rather than provoke, a war.

Inside China's Secret Wuhan National Biosafety Lab

Asia Times: Inside Wuhan's secretive National Biosafety Lab

Major report highlights the controversial research institute in the Chinese city where the first cases of Covid-19 were reported.

Controversy and secrecy appear to lurk in the corridors of the National Biosafety Laboratory in Wuhan.

Described as "a cell within the Chinese Academy of Science's Institute of Virology," it conducts "coronavirus research" and is a United Nations "reference laboratory for infectious diseases." It is also situated in the city which in December spawned the first reported cases of the deadly Covid-19 disease.

A wet market only 16 kilometers, or 10 miles, away initially became "ground zero" in what would turn out to be a global pandemic.

As well as specializing in seafood, the bustling bazaar sold snakes, raccoons, porcupines and even deer. They were kept in cages along the crowded walkways before the popular menagerie was closed down at the end of January.

About Southern Railways (SR):

Southern Railway (SR), situated in Chennai, is one of 17 Indian Railways territories, made in autonomous India. It was made on April 14, 1951, by the mix of three state rail lines, to be specific, Madras and Southern Mahratta, South Indian Railway and Mysore. The South Indian Railway came to the presence in the British provincial time as Great Southern India Railway Co., established in Great Britain in 1853 and enlisted in 1859. The head office was at Tiruchirappalli (Trichy).

The administration has taken all the railroad organizations in 1944. In 1948, following freedom, there were up to 42 distinctive railroad frameworks, an assortment of railroad organizations, which fluctuated in size and gauges. Different advisory groups exhibited recommendations, considered in extraordinary detail so as to ensure the conceivable unification with the least aggravation and conceivable change.

Barring farmers, rest may be asked to stay at home post April 14

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to discuss proposals to extend the Covid-19 lockdown to the end of the month in urban centres while easing it selectively for rural areas to allow harvesting, said officials with knowledge of the matter. Modi is scheduled to hold a video conference today (April 11) with chief ministers, ahead of the scheduled end of the three-week lockdown on April 14.The PM and chief ministers will debate whether rural areas can be fully opened up or just to the extent of allowing the critical agricultural activity, said the people cited above. An announcement regarding the shutdown's extension or otherwise could be made on Sunday, the officials said. The chances of the lockdown being lifted in urban centres from April 15 are bleak, officials said, citing the rising deaths and infections in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Indore. Odisha and Punjab have extended the lockdown until April 30 and May 1, respectively. Many other states have suggested the same to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), saying that only harvesting be allowed. As many as 133 districts in nearly a dozen states—a majority of them with urban concentrations—are under aggressive containment currently. The government doesn't want to disturb this arrangement.Vardhan Points to Rapid Rise"We are in the third week of the lockdown. Usually, all experts say if you use lockdown, it takes three-four weeks to flatten out the curve," Union health minister Harsh Vardhan said in a video conference on Friday with foreign diplomats. "I expect that in the coming days or weeks, we expect better results and India will come out of this crisis with minimal loss of lives." 75090033He pointed out that more than 400 districts in the country had not reported a single infection and India had the lowest coronavirus positive numbers in the world--3.4 cases per million population. In another video conference with state health ministers, Vardhan however pointed to a second surge in cases in Japan, South Korea and China and said some states in India were now seeing an "unusual speed in positive cases."The prime minister will take a call by arriving at a consensus with chief ministers, a senior central government official told ET."The harvesting of the rabi crop is essential and the same will be allowed," he said. "States have to specify an action plan if they are confident of opening up the rural areas fully without risking the spread of infections. Much of rural India is safe from the coronavirus so far but the question is if a chance can be taken."PK Mishra, principal secretary to the PM, met the 11 empowered groups of officers on Covid-19 on Friday to review steps to assist farmers across the country to harvest their produce while maintaining social distancing. Issues related to supply chain and logistics management to ensure the availability of essentials and arranging shelter for vulnerable groups such as migrant workers and the homeless were also reviewed by the senior officials on Friday. The government is also closely studying the experience of other countries with lockdown strategies, including Japan and Singapore imposing a lockdown after a second wave of positive cases. Modi spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday. They discussed the measures taken by their countries to deal with the crisis.Eleven states are under scrutiny and relief from the lockdown there looks difficult, the officials cited above said. These are Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, Telangana, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. Of the 133 districts in these states, those reporting more than 15 cases each have been targeted with a 'large outbreak containment strategy.' A 'cluster containment strategy' shas been applied to those with 6-15 cases each.

Niti boss on the nasty tradeoff India faces

Posted:

New Delhi: India should improve its disaster management preparation and ensure the availability of resources so that the country doesn't have to choose between "lives and livelihood" during crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic, said Niti Aayog vice chairman Rajiv Kumar."I hope we will not have to continuously try this tradeoff or balance between saving lives and livelihoods," he said at a global webinar on 'Covid-19 — Fallout & Future' organised by Bennett University's Times School of Media ."That's where we are today," he said at the closing session of the webinar on Thursday, listing the lessons India needs to draw. "I hope that there will be enough resources available with public authorities at all levels to ensure that when it comes to situations like this, we have enough resources to support lives because livelihoods will get lost when you have lockdowns."He said the public healthcare system must be strengthened so that it can cope with such outbreaks. "We need to get our act together so that next time we get into a situation we are much better prepared," he said. The pandemic has also exposed the issues arising from having a big unorganised sector, he said."We have too large an informal sector in our economy where our workers have no social safety net, where it is difficult for us to bring about any semblance of proper working conditions," Kumar said. "This informality of our workforce — 90% of them are in the informal sectors — has to be brought to a close."He called for more than the mere tokenism of signing ILO memorandums and treaties.'Need to Attract HealthcareThese need to be implemented, Kumar warned, or next time the country won't be able to control the exodus of people as migrant workers stream out of cities to their homes, as happened after the lockdown was imposed."This time we were able to, but it is something that is quite untenable," he said, calling for social and medical safety nets.On the healthcare side, he said there was a need to dramatically reduce the cost of medical education in the country, which may have got over-professionalised."Caretakers can come in different forms… We can have technically qualified and yet not-so-expensive specialists," he said, referring to an over-emphasis on MBBS degrees. He also called for scaling up research capabilities and attracting talent back to India for healthcare research so the country can come up with answers to new challenges."Why should it take as long as it takes to come up with a retroviral or a vaccine?" he said, calling for more resources and bringing together fragmented research capacities.

Coronavirus will kill 15 million export jobs

Posted:

New Delhi: More than 15 million jobs could be lost in India's export sector due to half of all orders getting cancelled and units unable to repay loans due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown, the apex body of exporters said on Friday. The cancellations and postponement of shipments have eroded packing credits and impacted exporters' fund-liquidity position as cash flows have completely dried up."With cancellation of over 50% of orders and gloomy forecast for the future, we expect 15 million job losses in exports and rising NPAs (nonperforming assets) amongst exporting units, hitting the economy very badly," said Sharad Kumar Saraf, president, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).Most of the retrenchment will be in labour-intensive sectors such as leather, gems and jewellery, handicrafts and textiles. 75090130The apparel exports sector estimates 2.5-3 million job losses because of order cancellations and buyers not clearing dues. "We expect around 2.5-3 million jobs both direct and indirect to get lost because of order cancellations and buyers not clearing our dues," said Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) chairman A Sakthivel. The apparel sector employs about 12.9 million people and around 70% of apparel units are MSMEs. While the handicraft sector has pegged job losses at 2 million, a representative of the gems and jewellery export sector said that there will be retrenchment even though the estimate is yet to be finalised.'India is Losing Markets to China'The engineering exports sector could lose an estimated 50,000-75,000 jobs. The textiles and garments sector employs around 32 million people. The bulk of this employment is unorganised and includes workers on contract, working through labour agencies, permanent and temporary staff. It is the second largest employer after agriculture.Sakthivel said labour is the largest cost in the industry, with wages amounting to 25-30% of the cost of production. "Further, units operate at thin margins of 3-4% and are completely dependent on export benefits granted by the government," he said. These estimates come days after the International Labour Organisation said about 400 million workers in India's informal economy are at risk of falling deeper into poverty during the Covid-19 crisis."We are left with very (few) orders and if factories are not allowed to work with a minimum work force to execute them (in a) timely (manner), many of them will suffer irreparable losses and bringing them to the brink of closure as they are saddled with fixed costs, which in any case have to be absorbed by them," Saraf said.He said India is losing markets to China as it has resumed work and said the country needed to restart factories without delay. "Small economies like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka too have announced relief packages," he added.Calling for a balance between life and livelihood, Saraf asked the government to immediately announce a relief package for exports. FIEO has asked for export-related manufacturing to be allowed to resume immediately with a minimum workforce adhering to safety, sanitisation and social-distancing norms. It suggested interest-free working capital term loans to exporters to cover the cost of wages, rental and utilities. It also asked for waivers on EPF and ESIC payments for three months from March to May. The grouping also sought extension of pre- and post-shipment credit by 90-180 days on maturity, rollover of forward cover without interest and penalty, automatic enhancement of limit by 25% to address liquidity challenges and extension of interest equalisation benefits.A representative of the cotton textile industry said layoffs could be avoided if banks are lenient in offering working capital to the sector and provide support when contracts in foreign currency collapse."The issue of layoffs can become serious if banks don't show forbearance," the person said. "This is crucial so that we can retain labour especially because they are trained labour."This an opportunity for India to mitigate the risks associated with products from China and capture market from competitors such as China, Bangladesh and Vietnam, the person said.

Safety gets top billing at malls to secure consumers

Posted:

NEW DELHI | MUMBAI: From restricting shoppers through token-based entry, maintaining strict fever screenings, installing full-body fumigation chambers, and even keeping adjacent seats vacant at theatres and food courts — top malls and retailers are planning a slew of measures to instil confidence in shoppers that malls are safe zones and there's no risk in shopping and eating out again.Of course, such measures could reduce footfalls drastically, squeezing cash flow further, but mall operators say it could also help convince authorities and consumers that there was no danger in visiting malls again."Malls have single owners who can control and administer the rules set out by the government. There is controlled point of entry and each one can be manned carefully with rules enforced strictly. With most malls temperature and access controlled, sanitisation is easier to manage," High Street Phoenix Mall's president (west), Rajendra Kalkar, said.Currently, retailers selling discretionary products from apparel to lifestyle merchandise are not allowed to open stores.Once the lockdown is lifted, social distancing norms will become an integral part of mall maintenance, owners say."We are in initial talks with cinema hall operators and retailers on how to ensure social distancing for at least 3-4 months. While cinemas may not be allowed to book more than 50% of the seats and ensure no one sits next to each other, retailers will be advised to ensure limited number of people inside the store at a time," said Manoj Gaur, the managing director of Noida-based Gaurs Group. With thousands of retail and restaurant doors shut and zero sales, several retailers are not in a position to pay rent and even wages to employees. Many have appealed to their mall and high-street landlords to change their contracts to a revenue-sharing model for the next nine months to help tide over the crippling effect of the coronavirus pandemic. While retailers maintain they will take adequate precautions wherever customer contact is involved and use technology like contactless payments to curtail contamination risk, some brand outlets which have high-contact services like make-overs and testers will discontinue these services."Inside the store, we will have sanitiser stations and floor markers to facilitate social distancing. We will be frequently steaming garments and disinfecting surfaces such as escalators, cash counters, card machines, shopping bags, etc.," Lifestyle International managing director Vasanth Kumar said.

For e-commerce firms, April may be the cruellest month

Posted:

Bengaluru: E-commerce firms in India, including leaders Amazon and Flipkart, will take a major hit if sales of non-essential items continue to be restricted and the lockdown is prolonged, industry executives and analysts said. Smartphones, electronics, furniture, large appliances, among others, have been categorised as non-essential items in the current situation, but contribute more than 90% of sales at these etailers, according to Forrester Research. The ecommerce sector cumulatively clocked sales of $32 billion last year. "The economic impact of these three weeks itself will take about three months to recover," said a partner at a growth-stage investment firm requesting anonymity. "The strict lockdown is a bad signal for investors, businesses and people globally, especially in the technology space, on the continued risks attached to doing business in India," he added. Some rules may quickly need to be relaxed for businesses to breathe easy, he said. If the online channel is opened up gradually, ecommerce firms will have to closely work with manufacturers, importers, the labour ministry, and ecosystem players to ensure that orders are fulfilled. They will also have to fix supply chain gaps by forging partnerships with neighbourhood stores, offline retailers and last-mile businesses. This is no mean task. Already, the top two ecommerce firms in the country by Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), Amazon and Flipkart, as well as several other niche e-tailers, including Lenskart, FirstCry and Nykaa, have seen sales slump, simply because most or all of their products are termed non-essential goods right now. "There will be limited demand for non-essential goods due to the impact on jobs and income... but there might be an uptick in demand during Diwali," said Satish Meena, an analyst at Forrester Research. If the sector opens up for business fully soon, Meena estimates that the e-commerce industry would grow 9-10% this year to touch $35 billion, although the rate of growth itself will be sharply lower from the 27% it clocked last year. Analysts said they expect the growth to come on the back of consumers getting accustomed to shopping online as they maintain social distancing even after the lockdown is lifted. Sale of essential goods, helped by the ongoing 21-day lockdown and probably some more, will grow by about 3%, Meena said. Earlier this week, industry body Internet and Mobile Association of India urged the government to allow ecommerce companies to resume operations completely, since they are best placed to follow social distancing guidelines by delivering products at doorsteps. This comes after industry tracker Counterpoint Research cut India's 2020 smartphone production forecast by 7-8% from the 300 million units predicted earlier. It also warned that the demand for smartphones is unlikely to pick up anytime soon. To be sure, even categories where ecommerce companies operate unhindered, such as grocery and pharma delivery players like BigBasket, Grofers, 1MG and Pharmeasy, have largely missed order and delivery timelines, mainly as a result of acute labour shortages and capacity issues. Hindustan Unilever, the country's biggest consumer goods firm, said earlier this week that average daily sales and factory output had tumbled to about 40% of its usual run rate, hurt by lack of labourers and transport disruptions. To counter such a scenario, Flipkart group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy told employees during a recent townhall that the company will actively forge more ecosystem partnerships since this would be a critical enabler for growth.

Covid-19 fallout: Rate transmission a far cry despite liquidity overhang

Posted:

Mumbai: Surplus cash in the banking system has surged to as much as Rs 4.74 lakh crore, surpassing liquidity levels seen four years ago during the demonetisation period. But, the liquidity glut is not bringing interest rates down, as risk-averse banks stay off from fresh loans amid an alarming Covid-19 scene."The entire liquidity could ignite credit expansion once normalcy is back," Federal Bank executive director Ashutosh Khajuria said. "High liquidity is a good measure to prevent any collapse of a bank which has stress on the deposit front. For some banks, it prompts to lend."But, there is no demand for credit due to the Covid-19 situation, Khajuria said. There was a net cash surplus, or liquidity, of Rs 4.41-4.74 lakh crore in the system in the second week of April, show data from the Reserve Bank of India.A surge in the benchmark bond yield, a key gauge to price any bonds, indicates that the high liquidity has failed to bring down rates on longer-term papers. The benchmark yield has gone up by 35 basis points since the unscheduled RBI policy meeting on March 27, pulling prices down."Unprecedented liquidity is an endeavour to make lenders generous," said Soumyajit Niyogi, an associate director at India Ratings & Research. However, that ability to lend is not percolating into keenness to lend owing to multiple uncertainties. But, high liquidity is also seen as a good shock absorber at the time of crisis," he said, adding: "In absence of normal activities, it is difficult to expect better rate transmission albeit sporadic."In a state bond auction, Kerala's 15-year bonds yielded as much 8.96%, more than 200 basis points higher than equivalent sovereign papers. The role of the central bank is now to restore market normalcy amid crisis, then look for rate transmission, dealers said.Bank certificates of deposit rate with 12-month maturity has jumped 28 basis points since March 30, the day before the RBI cut its policy rate by a sharp 75 basis points, or 0.75 percentage point. Most bank employees are now working from home unless it is branch banking. Such a set-up has crippled normal banking activities. This has resulted in thinning business activities.

NEW DELHI: An advance-decline which has largely been skewed towards the latter over the past few days and an easing of India VIX from recent highs suggest the market has become oversold position and that it may have found a bottom.NSE benchmark Nifty50 has had its second-worst quarter ever during the January-March period, recording a 23 per cent fall.India VIX, the fear gauge, hit a multi-year high of 86 level during this period. But it has since started falling and moved to 49.74 level by the end of Thursday's trade.Nifty ended the truncated week a tad above the 9,100 mark, after having rallied 12.72 per cent to post its biggest weekly gain since May 2009. The 30-share Sensex ended a seven-week losing streak and closed 4.23 per cent, or 1,265 points, higher at 31,159.The sharp drop in VIX -- which signals possible market volatility for the next 30 days – has come as a shot in the arm for the bulls and it hinting at market stability in the coming weeks."VIX has cooled off after testing the highs of 86-87 levels, which we had last witnessed during the 2008-09 market crash. This suggests wild swings could possibly subside going ahead, even though bouts of corrections cannot be ruled out," said Aditya Agarwala, Senior Technical Analyst at YES Securities.Sameet Chavan of Angel Broking said higher volatility in the recent past kept market participants on their toes. "With the fall in VIX, we hope the worst is behind us and the coming month will bring back smiles on investor faces," he said.VIX hit a record high level of 92 in 2008.Meanwhile, the net of Nifty500 advance-decline ratio has hit a multi-year low of -497 level, something that has been seen only thrice in last two decades. The advance-decline ratio is an indicator that shows market breadth. It is based on net advances, where the number of declining stocks is subtracted from the number of advancing stocks to reflect the health of the broader market. In the last four major corrections in 2015, 2010, 2008 and 2006 -- each measuring at least 30 per cent fall from respective lifetime highs amid global selloff – the net advance-decline ratio had approached oversold condition of -496, -466, -494, -487, respectively. "These extremes typically have coincided with significant market bottoms," says ICICI Securities, which recommends investors to utilise the ongoing selloff to construct long-term portfolio of quality stocks in a staggered manner with at least one-year time horizon. The Nifty500 universe covers 90 per cent of the free float market capitalisation on NSE and this is used to measure the extent of panic in the market.

Millennials show swag, emerge smartest breed of stock investors

Never has it been the case when the stock market has fallen 40% and brokerages have seen rapid customer acquisition in the country. In a comparable scenario, after the January 2008 market crash, the acquisition rate had dropped and stagnated for a good 10-12 months. It was only after 2009 elections that retail investors started opening accounts. This time around, industry data is showing a massive increase in participation from millennials, reflecting their 'swag' even as investors. They are a smarter breed of investors compared with the retail investor we have had a decade or 15 years ago.We observed that even when the market witnessed a rapid decline since around third week of February, it did not stop young retail investors from investing in equity. SBI Cards IPO was a major trigger point at this time, considering its pedigree.Afterwards the market just deep-dived as the Covid-19 pandemic frayed nerves of investors across the world and the risk-off sentiment spread like wildfire, resulting in FIIs dumping Indian stocks irrespective of their vintage and business strength. But guess what? For discount brokers this was one of the best months for account opening. They saw nearly 70% jump in account opening, and 80% of these new accounts were opened by millennials, who were first time investors.Secondly, mutual fund investment through SIPs was highest for each month compared with the year-ago periods. There was a steady rise in MF investment flow through SIP for in last six months, clearly indicating that millennials are investing through SIPs even in a falling market.Historically, retail investors enter the capital market or open demat accounts when the market is at its peak, and stock is the buzzword on the Street. There is a famous saying that 'when every person on the Street starts talking about the market, it is assumed that the market will go down.'But it was quite different this time around. Markets were down 40%. A three-year chart would show practically Sensex was down by good 12%-14% while Nifty fell somewhere between 11% and 13%.Yet, overall flow into MFs through SIPs increased during this period as retail participants understood that with the P/E ratio of market and forward earnings, they are bound to make money in the long run.Because of technology, zero brokerage and availability of information online, young investors are now researching and learning about stock market, and waiting for the right time to invest in the market. Most market-savvy millennials read Warren Buffet's letters and know his and Charlie Munger's investment strategies. They watch their interviews on YouTube for hours. They read stock composition and changes by their favourite fund managers. All of this goes on to show that millennials are shaping up as the smartest breed of investors in this country.

Government requests social media platforms to promote Aarogya Setu

Bengaluru: In its bid to drive awareness, installation and usage of the Aarogya Setu app, the ministry of electronics and information technology (Meity) has formally enlisted the help of social media platforms for "outreach purposes" on a "priority basis" in order to reach "all mobile users in India."In an emailed circular to these platforms, which ET has seen and reviewed, the ministry officials wrote, "...in the larger public interest as well as to fight this health emergency situation, you are requested to use your fullest capacity to outreach your users and making them aware and promoting the installation of the Aarogya Setu app on a priority basis." The platforms, the letter added, had to commit a minimum contribution of users "within a week's time", with a progress report to be shared with the ministry on a daily basis.A senior Meity official, while confirming the circular, told ET on a condition of anonymity, "Every company in the physical and the digital world is doing it. Our aim is to reach out to all the mobile users in the country while ensuring the privacy and security of every user. We are trying, in all possible manner, to reach out to the people." The official added, "This is an unprecedented situation. By the time the lockdown opens, such apps will become very important. We are trying to reach out through social media, and leverage their strength and innovation in this regard to inform users about the availability, features and the benefits of the app."The request also comes a few days after the app crossed over 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store, while on the iOS App Store, it was the top-ranked app in the Health and Fitness category.A Google spokesperson in an emailed response to ET's queries said, "We are committed to offering our support to not-for-profit developers, State and local health agencies offering publicly available crisis response apps and sites in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have introduced Ads grants, Google Maps Platform Crisis Response credits and are offering our support for the APIs and SDKs that are most commonly used for crisis response implementations."The spokesperson added, "In addition, to help surface authoritative information during these exceptional times, we are working closely with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other ministries including the PMO, to better enable people to find authoritative and helpful information around coronavirus (COVID-19) across our products and platforms. ShareChat, the social-content company, declined to comment.A TikTok* spokesperson, in an emailed response said, "We at TikTok are committed to support the government in its endeavour to drive awareness around Covid-19. In these testing times, we have been ensuring we provide information from trusted sources. We look forward to providing our support for the promotion of Aarogya Setu"Apar Gupta, executive director of the Internet Freedom Foundation told ET, "The request by the Government to promote the ArogyaSetu App by Social Networks is unprecedented and not in the exercise of any regulatory powers it enjoys. Hence, it is not a legal direction but a request which is being made." He added, "Here, while certain companies may choose to boost or promote the app, it may lead to controversy as there are lingering privacy and profiling concerns on the Aarogya Setu App itself."On Friday, ET reported that the Aarogya Setu app could find purposes beyond its core, citizen-facing contact-tracing use case and that the government had enlisted the help of telecom companies, banks and other institutions with large distribution networks to create awareness and drive installation of the app. The app, top sources said, could be used to "understand the disease" and help with other aspects such as predictive modelling, and using aggregated, anonymised data generated by the app to manage the lockdowns. The urgency from the government to create awareness and drive installs is understandable, given that the app will only gain full efficacy once the lockdown is lifted, and people start moving.* - Update: The story has been updated to reflect IFF's Apar Gupta's quote and TikTok's statement, which came in after the publication of this story

15 million export jobs may succumb to Covid blows
