An audience member attacked Bret Hart during his WWE Hall of Fame speech

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 07:13 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Pro wrestling star Bret "The Hitman" Hart is reportedly OK after a fan — if you can call him that — attacked the wrestler during the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony Saturday night.

Hart was mid-speech when the man, whose name is Zachary Madsen, leapt onto the stage, grabbed Hart, and pulled him to the ground. Fortunately, security personnel subdued the man quickly with the help of several other pro wrestlers. (As one might expect, attacking a wrestler in an arena full of other wrestlers is not a great idea.)

This is probably the best angle of the incident involving a fan (and I use that term loosely) attacking Bret Hart. Disgusting. This guy deserved everything he got in the aftermath. Glad to hear Bret was OK and able to resume his speech#WWEHOFhttps://t.co/6j1Rf8pkMb pic.twitter.com/pXwDdcIo6s

7 animals that found love after they had given up all hope

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 07:00 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

There comes a point in every young single frog's life where they give up on the idea of finding true love. Burned by endless Tinder dates and failed romances, some frogs just forego the idea of "frogmance" altogether.

They move into bachelor lily pads and Seamless entire fly dinners. They give up hope.

But bachelor frogs could stand to learn a thing or two from Romeo, a Sehuencas water frog dubbed "the world's loneliest frog," who recently found love after a prolonged period of isolation. Romeo was believed to be the last of his species until researchers found a Juliet in a Bolivian forest. Read more...

Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and the war on brunch highlight the latest 'SNL' Weekend Update

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 06:03 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Saturday Night Live's latest Weekend Update sketch mined Joe Biden's penchant for inappropriate touching and Donald Trump's ongoing U.S.-Mexico border drama for laughs.

It's hardly an all-timer example of SNL's recurring news segment, but co-host Michael Che got some good laughs out of Trump's so-called "war on brunch"  (I cackled at his "Million Megan March" line). And I don't know if the Independent Republicans of New York is a real thing (it's not), but the IRONY of a pro-Trump group dragging Biden's unacceptable behavior is delicious. Read more...

Kit Harington's 'SNL' monologue is just a star-studded 'Game of Thrones' troll

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 05:32 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Kit Harington hosted Saturday Night Live the weekend before HBO's final season of Game of Thrones kicks off. You think people on the set spent any time bugging him about spoilers?

Look no further than Harington's opening monologue. In between fans pumping him for information about "Who wins the Game of Thrones?" and what he thinks about Grindelwald and Dumbledore hooking up (yes, really), the Jon Snow actor deal with well-meaning spoiler questions from a number of his fellow HBO cast members.

It's less of a monologue than it is a Thrones-themed sketch in its own right, but Westeros casts a long shadow. And it ends with Harington trolling the audience in the best way, as he shouts out a would-be mega-spoiler: "Tyrion is the Night King!!" Read more...

'Saturday Night Live' teases every 'Game of Thrones' prequel, sequel, and spin-off

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 05:08 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

HBO's journey with Game of Thrones is set to end in a matter of weeks, but our time in Westeros is only just beginning.

A Saturday Night Live-crafted sizzle reel of upcoming prequels, sequels, and spin-offs runs through the many, many (oh so many) stories that are still left to be told. And yeah, most of them are really just riffs on other shows. But Game of Thrones is mega popular and the people want more, so no one will notice.

There's Arya, an animated play on MTV's Daria but featuring the moody child-assassin Stark and her frequently bloodied sword. If shmaltzy sitcoms are more your thing, The Queen of King's Landing shows us what life at home looks like for Samwell Tarly and Gilly the Wildling. Yeah, it's just The King of Queens with more dirt on its face, but Game of Thrones, y'all. Read more...

Creepy Joe Biden fails at sensitivity training on the 'SNL' cold open

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 04:51 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Saturday Night Live's latest cold open chose as its target an overly handsy white male politician with a history of touching women inappropriately. Not, not that one. I'm talking about Joe Biden.

The former Obama Vice President's struggles with keeping his hands to himself is now a matter of public record, and — in the sketch's view — a concerned Democratic Party wants to get him some much-needed sensitivity training. Former SNL writer and cast member Jason Sudeikis revived his memorable Biden impression for this one, while host Kit Harington was nowhere in sight. Read more...

5 cheap online courses that'll help you hack your brain

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 02:00 AM PDT

News flash: people are still getting smarter (really).

On one hand, there's the Flynn effect, which pertains to the pattern of human IQ consistently rising year after year. But you can also consider this: In the next century, brain hacks will be the stuff of today's science fiction.

We may well take a pill to enhance brain capacity, or wear a headband to rev up those neural connectionsElon Musk even suggested we will have creepy cranial bionic implants to boost intelligence, thus making the term "brain hacks" quite literal (um, no thank you).

But do you really have to wait several decades for newfangled tech to *maybe* come out in order to shape your brain? No, you don't.  Read more...

6 hilarious SNL 'Game of Thrones' sketches you can binge right now

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 02:24 PM PDT

Jon Snow may know nothing, but boy are we hoping Game of Thrones star Kit Harington understands what he got himself into.

Considering the promo for Harington hosting the April 6 episode of Saturday Night Live involves Leslie Jones having him pelted with doughnuts and shamed, Cersei Lannister style, you can bet The Prince That Was Promised will be on the receiving end of at least a few Thrones jokes come airtime.

How far the comedy powerhouse will take those zingers remains to be seen, but if the show's track record and SNL fans' appetites for Thrones roasting is any indication — it'll be quite the sight. Read more...

Netflix confirms it will no longer support AirPlay capability

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:28 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

The days of beaming your favorite Netflix show to your Apple TV are officially over.

Netflix suddenly and unceremoniously stopped supporting AirPlay capability, quietly informing users accustomed to the wireless streaming feature of the change via service support page.

“AirPlay is no longer supported for use with Netflix due to technical limitations,” the announcement read, offering up few additional details.

Image: netflix

Some users have interpreted Netflix's unexpected parting of the ways with AirPlay as a not-so-subtle dig between competitors. Apple just recently announced a major play for streaming service dominance with Apple TV+ and prior to that "technical limitations" announcement, Netflix had been consistently compatible with AirPlay, first beginning in 2013. Paul Rudd is 50 years old and literally no one believes him

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:31 AM PDT

Some people age well, and then there's Paul Rudd. The Avengers: Endgame actor turned 50 years old on April 6, a fact that is barely believable to some and evidence of witchcraft to others.

People on Twitter reacted to the news that Rudd is 50 whole-ass years old with skepticism and histrionics, which makes sense considering the dude has spent every year of his adult life looking the exact age he was when the Cold Ones came to him in the night, whispering promises of youth and success in exchange for something small, something he wouldn't even miss, and after the bargain was struck he found they were correct. 'Fortnite' is a winner because Epic Games follows as easily as it leads

Sometimes, the very best you can do is exactly what someone else did.

The journey that Epic Games has been on with Fortnite since the game's "battle royale" mode launched in Sept. 2017 has been highlighted by smart moves. From the Battle Pass to seasonal shifts and wild, limited-time events that subvert the competitive purpose of the game, Fortnite has been blazing a trail.

Now, for its next trick, Epic is preparing an update that skips new and fresh in favor of been there, done that: the Reboot Van. It's a feature borrowed from Apex Legends, the competing battle royale that launched earlier in 2019. Read more...

Chris Evans is launching a political website with some help from Congress

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:06 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

A video of actor Chris Evans asking members of US Congress to participate in his to-be-launched political website leaked to CNN, spoiling the breadth of his formerly secret project.

As reported by CNN, the video shows Evans meeting with congresspeople, including Senators Cory Booker and Amy Klobuchar, and encouraging them to answer questions about prescient political issues on camera.

In the video, Evans says he intends for the website, "A Starting Point," to be a "civic engagement project" that allows people to better understand the Democratic and Republican arguments for current issues affecting the country. Participating congresspeople are given a list of questions and subsequently interviewed on-camera by Evans, who asks in the video that participants keep their individual answers "around a minute" in length and to provide links for further information on each issue.  Read more...

'Game of Thrones' composer looks back on that iconic theme song

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi has never read A Song of Ice and Fire. He'll get to someday – he's been a bit busy for the past nine years working on the Emmy-winning Game of Thrones score.

Before Thrones, Djawadi had done a handful of TV and film scoring, including the MCU-launching Iron Man soundtrack. His work caught the attention of Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who scheduled a meeting and showed him the first two episodes.

Djawadi got to work immediately, yielding one of the most indelible television or film scores of our generation and a theme song that, to be perfectly honest, slaps. Read more...

Gender reveals are awful. (Trans)gender reveals are a different story.

Not all gender reveal parties are bad — in fact, there’s one type of gender reveal that might *actually* be considered good.

I know it’s hard to believe, especially when you consider the path of destruction our gender reveal hysteria has left behind. In 2017, a gender reveal party that involved explosives sparked a 47,000 acre wildfire and left $8 million worth of damage behind. Gender reveal parties have caused broken ankles and generated mass chaos. No one is safe — not the people forced to watch these parties or, far more seriously, the children forced to live out their parents' highly gendered expectations. Read more...

Daily Beast: Trump Is Already Plotting His Post-White House Tell-All Memoir

The president is 'excited' about penning a dishy book. So much so that he keeps talking about the scores he plans to settle.

As he navigates turbulent domestic and international affairs, President Donald Trump has been keeping one eye on an opportunity that awaits him in his post-White House career.

Since at least mid-2017, Trump has been talking about the post-presidential memoir he will write, or, more likely, have ghostwritten on his behalf. He is planning on it being explosive and assumes (not without reason) that it will be a New York Times bestseller. And since the early days of his administration, he has conveyed his eagerness to get started on the project.

* 'If we have a deal, we'll have a summit,' Trump said

US President Donald Trump met with China's chief trade negotiator, Vice-Premier Liu He, at the White House on Thursday afternoon, but said a summit with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping would not be announced until a trade deal was in place.

"If we have a deal, there will be summit. I think we will know over the next four weeks," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that a final, written agreement would take an additional two weeks. "I look forward to seeing Xi; he will be here."

Trump didn't say whether that meeting would be in Washington or his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where they met for the first time two years ago.

U.S. Sanctions Against Iran Are Having An Impact

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:07 PM PDT

Samuel Siskind, Opslens: Iran Cutting Funds to Syria as U.S. Sanctions Tighten

Middle East media has reported Iran cutting funds to militia groups in Syria as its economy continues to suffer from the renewed imposition of US sanctions.

According to reports, militant groups backed by Tehran have reported to have missed paychecks over the past months. Even financial aid to Iran's closest Arab ally, the Lebanese Hezbollah, has dried up in the recent period.

Of course no one should be surprised at these developments. The American sanctions that kicked back in last November were designed well. They've hit Iran's biggest industries, especially the oil sector, and have been slowly producing devastating effects. In January, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran is facing its toughest economic situation in 40 years, and that the United States was squarely to blame.

Update: Iran cuts Syria militia funds as US economic sanctions tighten (Middle East Monitor)

WNU Editor: When President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran is facing its toughest economic situation in 40 years, that got my attention. Fighting wars, even through proxies, is a very expensive proposition. If you do not have the economic resources to sustain it, you will eventually lose. And while I believe Iran will continue to spend heavily in places like Syria or Yemen, U.S. sanctions is bleeding them everywhere else.

Strategy Page: Strategic Weapons: Saudi Goes Big On THAAD

audi Arabia has made a billion dollar down payment on its $15 billion order for a THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) anti-missile system. The down payment is to enable the manufacturer to start production on items that take a long time to produce. The Saudi order is the largest ever for THAAD. The Saudis are buying 44 launchers, 360 missiles and radar and control stations for seven batteries. In addition, this deal will pay for an upgrade of Saudi radar warning and communications infrastructure as well as bases for the THAAD batteries and maintenance facilities. The cost will cover the training of over a thousand Saudi personnel to operate and maintain the THAAD batteries and associated early warning radar systems.

President Trump Warns a Democratic Win in 2020 Could ‘Leave Israel Out There’

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 01:58 PM PDT

(LAS VEGAS) — President Donald Trump warned on Saturday that a Democratic victory in 2020 could “leave Israel out there,” as he highlighted his pro-Israel actions in an effort to make the case for Jewish voters to back his re-election.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition, Trump touted his precedent-shredding actions to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv and recognition last month of Israeli sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel seized from Syria in 1967.

“We got you something that you wanted,” Trump said of the embassy move, adding, “Unlike other presidents, I keep my promises.”

The group, backed by GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson, supported Trump’s 2016 campaign and is preparing to spend millions on his 2020 effort.

“I know that the Republican Jewish Coalition will help lead our party to another historic victory,” Trump said. “We need more Republicans. Let’s go, so we can win everything.”

Jewish voters in the U.S. have traditionally sided heavily with Democrats — and are often ideologically liberal — but Republicans are hoping to narrow the gap next year, in part as Trump cites actions that he says demonstrate support for Israel.

Trump earned standing ovations for recounting both the embassy move and the Golan Heights recognition.

Trump noted it had long been a priority for Adelson and his wife, Miriam. “That is the most important thing that’s ever happened in their life,” Trump said. “They love Israel.”

Trump’s speech comes weeks after he suggested Democrats “hate” Jews. His remark followed an internal fight among Democrats over how to respond to comments by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., that some criticized as anti-Semitic.

Trump mockingly thanked Omar as he began his speech, before adding, “Oh, I forgot. She doesn’t like Israel, I forgot, I’m sorry. No, she doesn’t like Israel, does she? Please, I apologize.”

He also accused Democrats of allowing anti-Semitism to “take root” in their party.

Before Trump’s appearance, people assembled for the event carried signs with “We are Jews for Trump” and “Trump” written in Hebrew. Dozens of men and several women wore red yarmulkes with “Trump” in white that were distributed at the event.

Trump also took credit for eliminating hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the Palestinians and for pulling the U.S. out of several U.N. organizations, the U.N. Human Rights Council and UNESCO, citing anti-Israel bias in their agendas.

Trump criticized some 2020 Democrats who have suggesting they would re-enter the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, from which Trump withdrew the United States. The agreement was fiercely opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has cheered as Trump re-imposed stringent new sanctions on the country that Israel regards as an existential threat. Trump is closely aligned with Netanayu, who’s seeking to return power in Tuesday’s national election.

Trump predicted that election is “gonna be close,” adding it features “Two good people,” seemingly referring to Netanyahu and his chief threat to Netanyahu’s coalition, former Israeli army chief of staff, Benny Gantz.

Despite his criticism of Democrats, Trump has faced his own criticism from the Jewish community. Trump was slow to condemn white supremacists who marched violently in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. The previous year, he circulated an image of a six-pointed star alongside a photo of Hillary Clinton, a pile of money and the words “most corrupt candidate ever.”

When he addressed the RJC in 2015 he said he didn’t expect to earn their support because he wouldn’t take their money. “You want to control your politicians, that’s fine,” Trump said at the time. Ultimately, the group and many of its donors backed Trump.

Trump met privately with Adelson before speaking, according to an official. Adelson has cancer and has been in poor health, but he and his wife attended Trump’s remarks — receiving a standing ovation when they entered the ballroom.

The Adelsons gave Trump’s campaign $30 million in 2016. They followed that by contributing $100 million to the Republican Party for the 2018 midterm elections.

Introducing Trump, former Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., the chairman of the RJC, led the audience in an adapted version of the Passover reading “Dayenu,” as he recounted what Trump had done for Israel.

Stuart Weil, a Jewish man from Fresno, California, said Americans have traditionally been very supportive of Israel but “the progressive, liberal wing of the Democratic Party” is changing that.

Weil, who wore a blue Trump-style hat that read, “Making Israel & America Great Again,” says he’s a Republican because of the party’s strong stance on Israel.

According to AP Votecast, a survey of more than 115,000 midterm voters and 3,500 Jewish voters nationwide, voters who identified as Jewish broke for Democrats over Republicans by a wide margin, 72 percent to 26 percent, in 2016.

Over the past decade, Jewish voters have shown stability in their partisanship, according to data from Pew Research Center. Jewish voters identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party over the Republican Party by a roughly 2-1 ratio.

Rwandan President Pardons Hundreds Convicted of Having or Assisting in an Abortion

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:57 PM PDT

The President of Rwanda pardoned hundreds of people convicted of having or assisting in an abortion this week.

President Paul Kagame pardoned 367 people “convicted for the offenses of abortion, complicity in abortion and infanticide,” the Prime Minister’s cabinet announced on Thursday.

Women’s access to abortion has long been restricted in Rwanda. Abortion in cases of rape, incest, forced marriage or the health of the woman or fetus has only been legal since 2012, although a court and two doctors are needed to sign off on the procedure. The Rwandan government revised its legal code in fall 2018 to remove the requirement for a court and additional doctor’s permission, according to The East African, though the new provision has not yet been put into force by a ministerial order.

Advocates for women’s rights welcomed the pardons. The group SPECTRA: Young Feminists Activism, which advocates for women’s rights in Rwanda, tweeted, “We happily welcome the Presidential pardon of the 367 women & girls who were in prison for abortion or related charges. We call for continuing in same direction and decriminalise abortion for all cases bse [sic] abortion is a healthcare need not a luxury.”

https://twitter.com/spectra_rw/status/1113745380943048704

Anu Kumar, president of the international abortion advocacy group Ipas, tweeted, “Progress in Rwanda: President Kagame pardons 100s of women & girls jailed for abortion. Criminal abortion laws are dangerous & only increase the number of women & girls who resort to unsafe abortion methods. Abortion must be safe, legal & accessible.”

About 34% of abortions in Rwanda are performed by traditional healers, and about 17% are performed by women themselves, according to the Guttmacher Institute. About 40% of all abortions in the country require further medical attention.

Former President Obama Encourages Young Europeans in Climate Change and Inequality Debate

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:24 AM PDT

(BERLIN) — Former U.S. President Barack Obama says he wants to support young leaders in Europe and elsewhere who are trying to tackle problems such as climate change and inequality.

Obama told a town hall meeting in Berlin on Saturday that mentoring activists through his foundation may help encourage “millions of people who are working on the values and causes that we so deeply believe in.”

He said despite Europe’s wealth, social achievements and decades of peace, “we also know that powerful forces are working to reverse many of these trends.”

The former president offered activists advice on a range of topics, from capitalism to mindfulness.

Obama suggested that fostering reasoned debate online should be a key task to keep politics from going in a negative direction.

Greek Police Use Tear Gas in Third Straight Day of Clashing With Migrants

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 07:11 AM PDT

(DIAVATA, Greece) — Hundreds of protesting migrants clashed with police for a third straight day in northern Greece on Saturday, with migrants throwing rocks at officers who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

Authorities say the demonstrations outside a migrant camp in Diavata have been triggered by false reports on social media that restrictions on travel to northern Europe had been lifted.

Several migrants, including children, fainted amid the clouds of tear gas Saturday. The protesters have lit fires to make the air more bearable, but blazes have also erupted from exploding stun grenades. In Athens, migrants left a main railway station after blocking trains on Friday and services resumed Saturday.

Greek officials say the migrants have been mobilized by false reports originating on social media that the road to central Europe, tightly sealed to migrants for three years, is open again, and that buses chartered by non-governmental organizations are waiting on the other side of the border with North Macedonia, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) to the north of Diavata.

“We must constantly fight the fake news,” Nikos Ragos, the migrant policy ministry’s coordinator for northern Greece, told The Associated Press.

He added that some of the migrants were now questioning the false reports, but that cybercrime police must find the source and the motive for spreading the claims.

Greek TV station Ant1 showed a migrant’s cellphone screen containing a social media message, in Arabic, sent earlier this week from a purported NGO called “Caravan of Hope” advising migrants that Greece was to open the border with North Macedonia on April 5 at noon.

The protesting migrants in Diavata are mostly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of them are not camp residents, but came from all over Greece in order to reach the North Macedonia border. Some who tried to break into the camp were thrown out by police and at least two were arrested.

Almost none of the camp dwellers, and certainly none among the protesters, want to stay in Greece. They want to move on to wealthier central and northern European countries, especially Germany. Many feel trapped in Greece and despair with the slow pace of the processing of asylum applications.

“We have problems here. I arrived a year and a half ago and they have set my (asylum application) interview for December 2021,” Shapour Karimi, 43, an Iranian and father of one child, told the Associated Press. “What will I do all this time? A solution must be found so we can depart.”

‘Yellow Vest’ Protestors Crowd French Streets for 21st Straight Weekend

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 06:57 AM PDT

(PARIS) — Protesters from the yellow vest movement took to the streets of France on Saturday for a 21st straight weekend, with thousands marching across Paris and a group briefly invading the busy beltway around the capital.

Riot police rounded up the protesters on the beltway and fired a round of tear gas on the street above, apparently to stop others from entering a ramp onto the road.

At another of Saturday’s numerous protests around the country, police fired tear gas in Rouen, in Normandy, in a showdown with protesters after fires were set in garbage cans and elsewhere.

The Interior Ministry reported initial attendance figures that put the number of protesters in Paris at midday at 3,100, compared to the 1,800 who were counted a week earlier at the same time, French media reported. Nationwide, the ministry counted 6,300 protest participants.

“We will continue until victory. We give up nothing, because today, nothing has been obtained,” Agnes Berger, a protester from Saint Cloud, west of Paris, said. “We still have a corrupt system, an elite that governs against the people.”

The number of people taking part in the yellow vest demonstrations has been dwindling since the first protests over fuel hikes in mid-November attracted hundreds of thousands turned out. But the leaderless grassroots movement for social and economic justice continues to pose a challenge for French President Emmanuel Macron.

Macron organized a national debate to respond to concerns about sinking living standards, stagnant wages and high unemployment that were aired at the demonstrations. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is set to provide an initial recap Monday of the debate, then to address parliament. Any proposals growing out of the numerous meetings that made up the initiatives were expected later.

Many yellow vest participants remain skeptical. Jeremy Gibon, from the suburb of Le Mesnil-Amelot, underscored protesters’ determination with his call Saturday for a radical solution that creates a “new system.”

“It’s a war of attrition,” Gibon said. “We feel if we make everything fall, we can rebuild something….It will be for us. You’ll see.”

The movement got its name because protesters wore the fluorescent safety vests motorists are required to carry in France from the start. The vests symbolized frustration over fuel tax increases Macron ordered as a disincentive to drivers, an action intended to curb climate change.

The movement’s demands since have multiplied to include a people’s referendum and the restoration of a wealth tax, with increasing the buying power of the majority of France’s people a bottom line.

Like protesters’ demands, police tactics for maintaining order during the weekly protests have evolved. Paris police fine-tuned their strategy to make officers more mobile and more proactive in countering danger and destruction. A new police chief was appointed.

Last month, rioters set life-threatening fires, ransacked luxury stores and attacked police around Champs-Elysees Avenue, the street famous for its beauty and high-end shops. The Champs-Elysees has since been declared off-limits to protesters.

One prominent figure in the movement, Eric Drouet, was among a half-dozen protesters seen in the prohibited area and issued a fine he plans to contest, Drouet’s lawyer, Kheops Lara, told French television channel LCI.

In Paris, one of the two marches on Saturday went from the Place de la Republique in the east to the business district, La Defense, on the capital’s western edge. The finishing point was chosen because of its significance in the world of finance, Drouet said.

The yellow vest movement “hasn’t stopped at all,” Drouet told LCI.

Meanwhile, France’s Constitutional Council vetoed Thursday a measure backed by Macron’s government to prevent violence during protests. The law was not proposed as an outgrowth of the yellow vest protests.

The Constitutional Council struck down provisions authorizing regional prefects to ban people from demonstrations if they were seen as a serious threat to public order. The council ruled that would give authorities “excessive latitude” and infringe on freedom of expression.

But it approved other parts of the law — not yet in force. One broadens the circumstances under which police can search protesters’ bags and vehicles. The other makes it a crime for protesters to conceal their faces, with convictions punishable by up to one year in prison and a 15,000-euro ($17,000) fine.

Watch MS Dhoni join Shane Watson and Imran Tahir’s sons in a playful run

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 12:05 AM PDT

Chennai: Who is the actual kid? The question was on everyone's lips after Mahendra Singh Dhoni, lively and full of fun, joined Imran Tahir and Shane Watson's sons for a playful run at the Chepauk. While he rarely betrays emotions on the field regardless of the match situation, the story can often be different off it.

Dhoni was in a playful mood after his team Chennai Super Kings' convincing win over Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday evening. In the video posted by the franchise, the 37-year-old, after entering the frame from behind, is seen running alongside the kids only to lift Tahir's son and run back to the finishing line.

"Jr. #ParasakthiExpress and Jr. Watto having a sprint face-off and a lightning joins them! Priceless!" CSK wrote on the team twitter handle.

"ParasakthiExpress picks wickets and runs! #Thala picks Jr. #ParasakthiExpress and runs!" mentioned another tweet, leaving the social media buzzing with activity.

It is well-known that India's two-time World Cup winning skipper is comfortable around kids and his videos with daughter Ziva Dhoni often go viral.

Earlier, coming in to bat at No. 4, Dhoni hit Sam Curran for a six over deep mid-wicket on the second ball of the 19th over. In the same over, Dhoni hit a couple of fours. The CSK skipper ended up scoring an unbeaten 37 off 23 balls with the help of four fours and a six.

Plea in Supreme Court for bringing political parties under RTI

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 12:05 AM PDT

New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to declare all registered and recognised political parties as "public authority" under the Right to Information Act.

The plea, filed by BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, said, "As per section 29C of the Representation of People Act, donations received by political parties are required to be reported to the Election Commission of India. This obligation points towards their public character. "Therefore, this court can declare that political parties are a 'Public Authority' under Section 2(h) of the RTI Act, 2005 by reading Tenth Schedule of the Constitution with sections 29A, 29B and 29C of the RPA," it said.

The plea further said that the power of ECI to allot election symbols to political parties for their recognition and can suspend or withdraw it in violation of the Model Code of Conduct was indicative of their public character. "Moreover, the Political Parties get tax exemptions, which amounts to indirect financing of the Political Parties in terms of Section 2(h) of the RTI Act," it said.

The plea also sought directions to declare that all registered and recognized political parties should, within a period of four weeks, appoint the Public Information Officer, Appellate Authority and make disclosures under the RTI Act, 2005. It further sought directions that the EC should ensure that in the event of non-compliance by political parties of the provisions of the RPA, RTI Act, Income Tax Act, Model Code of Conduct and other election laws and rules, they should be de-recognized and suffer other penalties.

The plea said the Central and the state governments have allotted to political parties accommodations at prime locations all over the country either, free of cost, or on concessional rates which amounted to their indirect financing. "Doordarshan allots free airtime to political parties during elections. This is another instance of indirect financing. As they are the life blood of the entire constitutional scheme in a democratic polity and as they are directly and indirectly financed by the Central and state governments in various ways, they need to be declared 'Public Authority' under the RTI Act," it said.

The plea further said that the ECI spent money for providing them facilities, such as free electoral rolls and free broadcast facilities which resulted in loss of revenue. "If closely monitored and totalled, the full amount of public funds spent on political parties, would possibly amount to thousands of crores," it said.

Indore: CBSE to focus on ethics, integrity in school education

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will begin training of teachers in ethics and integrity from 2019-20 session. The module is aimed at helping students to become better leaders of tomorrow. Teachers would have to attend a two-day workshop in which they will be trained to use plays, anecdotes and audio visual materials to teach students about ethics.

"The objective is to create an environment in which existing practices and policies can be critically examined and students can be sensitised," stated a circular issued by the board. The teachers will be trained to teach students about responsibility, respect, fairness, trustworthiness and honesty through historical and current events.

"Academic curriculum is constantly updated to meet increasing demands of a changing society. Yet, we pay far less attention to habits that build ethical leaders," CBSE's circular stated. The teachers will be expected to teach students through discussion, write ups and articles by well-known thinkers such as American psychologist, author, columnist and youth development expert Marilyn Price-Mitcheland, according to CBSE. Teachers from the city have welcomed the move.

A group of teachers including Rinky Wadhwani said, "Value education is very much a part of all subjects that are taught currently. We are, however, hopeful that the training would help teachers learn new ways of teaching it."Parents found the move essential and positive. "There was a time when teachers ensured that they passed on values to students along withbasic education but the trend vanished," parent Anurag Jain said.Another parent Manish Chowdhury said, "Training is important for everyone. This training will prepare students to become better human beings."

The city on Saturday celebrated 'Gudi Padwa', the Hindu New Year day, with fervour and enthusiasm. The New Year celebration began with offerings made to rising sun. It was also the beginning of nine- day Navaratri festival that falls in Hindu Chaitra month.  Most temples received steady stream of devotees for whole day. As a part of tradition, most families ate a paste of neem leaves prepared with jaggery and tamarind believed to purify blood and strengthen body's immune system.

The mass worship of Lord Sun was also organised at Rajwada by Sarthak Hindu Navrash committee where large number of people including elected representatives participated. Bhajans were also recited by singers.  Under guidance of dancer Ragini Makkar, students gave a classical dance performance. Educator Dakshin Dave highlighted importance of festival. Committee convener Shankar Lalwani said politicians, social workers offered 'arghya' to Lord Sun.

The programme was conducted by Ankit Raval. Shlok Sharma gave vote of the thanks. "Jaggery and coriander were distributed after which everyone exchanged New Year greetings," Lalwani said. 'Kanya pujan' was also organised in city.

Indore: ‘If you want to go far, nurture people along the way’

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 12:05 AM PDT

The foremost question that you need to ask yourself is: Why do you want to be a CEO? It should not be to prove to anyone. Instead, you should have a desire and have a sound reason for that. If you are proud to be in HR and enjoy your role – excell. The essence is that if you want to go far, nurture people along the way.

This was stated by CEO of Birla Carbon Dr Santrupt Mishra while addressing The Ivy League: CEO Forum on the topic, 'It is all about people: Attracting, nurturing and retaining talent' held here on Friday. The event was organised by Mélange Curations.

Dr Santrupt Mishra, who is also an independent director on board of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, threw light on best HR practices. "You can't be a mediocre HR professional and claim to be a successful CEO. Last but not the least, you must be ready to fail. You must know what you can leverage as your strengths and be willing to prepare yourself with specifics to get there. It is not that complex but at the same time it's not easy," he said.

Major take away of session

  • We should know the kind of talent we want to get for the organisation and in which aspects we are bringing it to organisation.
  • The kind of culture we are developing inside the organisation that should attract resilience.
  • HR should have policies made according to current requirement and change. Policies should meet basic requirements of individuals.
  • Mobility is critical way of nurturing talent, if we want to retain people we need to create mobility.
  • Agility is required for HR profile.
  • HR should bring freedom from fear – This is biggest failure of HR.

Groom gets permission to travel on closed highway leading to bride’s home in Jammu and Kashmir

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 12:05 AM PDT

Srinagar: A marriage party had to obtain permission from the district authorities on Sunday to travel on the highway from Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district to Doda. Authorities have ordered closure of the national highway on Sundays and Wednesdays for all civil and public transport to secure the movement of security forces convoys.

The order issued by the Additional District Development Commissioner, Anantnag, said that the marriage party of Danish Ali will include 12 other people who will travel on Sunday in four vehicles on the highway and their travel would be subject to frisking and checking by the security forces.

The permission issued also specified the registration numbers of the vehicles. Authorities had issued a notification earlier to disallow all civil and public transport on the national highway from Udhampur district in the Jammu division to Baramulla district in the valley on Sundays and Wednesdays to secure the movement of security forces convoys.

From 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays, only security forces convoys would travel on the highway. The notification said the order would be in force till May 31. The decision was taken in the aftermath of February 14 terror attack on the highway in Pulwama district in which 40 CRPF troopers were killed. Authorities, however, said the highway ban order would not apply to school buses, medical emergencies and other bonafide movements like those of tourists, businessmen and agriculturists.
